I just learned today that I got into UNC- Chapel Hill's MED Program. Has anyone here ever done it, or know someone who did? How did you like it? What was the schedule like? How much did it help you in school/ medical school?

Do a search under the Pre-Allo forum. I recall that last year someone was accepted into this program, had some questions and got nice answers.

I did it this past summer! It is indeed very intense. Your taking an abbreviated version of your first year of medical school in nine weeks.

The curriculum is made up of Anatomy (+ lab), Immunology, Microbiology (+ lab), Histology (+ lab), Biochemistry, MCAT Prep Class, Physiology.

Every Monday you have an exam in each of the subject areas.

The TOP 20 of the MED class are ranked and recognized at the closing ceremony in July. There are about 80 students who participate every year. Many of them are gunners... so be prepared for some fierce competition. At the same time, you will have the opportunity to make some lifelong friends, tweak your studying habits, and experience a sample of what it's like to be in medical school.

However, I do caution you. If you do not have the GPA and MCAT scores, then MED will not help you much. If you think you can study for your MED classes and study for the MCAT at the same time, you are in for a big surprise. You either choose to do really well in one or on the other. If I had the chance to go back, I would chose the MCAT over MED.

I did extremely well in MED, and I am still struggling to get into schools. My MCAT and GPA is below average.

Just a tip: The KEY to doing well in MED is being consistent and persistent. Start Strong, Finish Strong!

Well thanks for the advice celltech. The Director of Recruitment from UNC School of Dentistry came to my school the other day, and I ran into him. I told him that I had gotten in, and he said, "Get ready for 9 weeks of hell."

Umm..... is it really that bad?

If you don't plan on doing much else besides studying during the summer, then I would say MED is not that bad. I hardly did anything but study day and night. It requires a lot of stamina.

Typically classes would start at 8am and finish around 3 or 4, sometimes 5pm. I would go home since I didn't stay in the dorm, grab something to eat, take a nap and be back on campus at 7-7:30pm, and studied until 1 or 2am...

They use e-mail to respond, usually from Mid-March to late April.

I hear good things and bad things about it. The bad thing is that if you are not ready and not scoring well on practice tests and rush to take it, you may not do well and it can hurt you. If you take it afterwards, you will not have time to study for it during MED and you will be so burned out from the program. But I think they are gearing towards the last 3 weeks of the program focusing on MCAT/DAT prep, I don't know yet. Any advice is greatly appreciated, and tips on doing well in the program.

Hey how do you know they are gearing the last few weeks to MCAT/DAT Prep? Did an MED rep tell you this? I am just curious b/c I am in the same situation..

Lol! I have to say that his statement is accurate to my experience. That being said it was a great experience that I was fortunate to have. As someone else said, it requires a lot of stamina and you won't have much time for anything else while doing the program. Hit the ground running and DO NOT fall behind. If you fall behind it will be very difficult to catch up.

As for studying for MCAT/DAT simultaneously with MED, I haven't met a person yet that said they had time to do both, so be ready to do either or. Personally I think if you choose to do the MED program then your first priority should be to do well in the program. You can always study for exam later or before. If you absolutely have to study during the months you will do MED, then my advice to you is to not even bother with the MED program. You will not have time to do both (or at least I didn't and the rest of my class didn't) so make your decision now as to what you want to do for the summer.

Isn't MCAT prep a part of the program? I can understand them wanting to focus on medical school simulation but I would also think they would want to help you prepare for the MCAT as well.

Yes, you will do MCAT prep.

I havent seen any. I was wondering what was going to be in the dorm like microwaves, fridges on the floor or anything? I wasnt really trying to buy breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day.

You had to bring your own fridge and microwave when I did it. Could've changed though.
