Does anyone happen to know about UNC's application process...I am worried because I submitted my AADSAS on May 23 so I would be early. But I haven't completed the supplemental application because I just realized last week that it was supposed to be submitted with the AADSAS, totally my stupidity. I'm taking the DAT on the 19th so I don't know if I should go ahead and do the supplemental, or take my time and wait until after my DAT. It has a few short essay questions and I have heard they place a lot of emphasis on their supplementals.

Even though they don't start reviewing applications until around August 1st, how do they sort who goes first? Is my application pushed back because of the supplemental?😕

Even though they already have your AADSAS, the adcom won't look at your app until they have everything. Your application is not complete without the supplemental app, fee, and your DAT scores. I assume they look at them in order received and/or by category (instate vs. out of state).

I would begin filling out the essays as soon as possible so you have time to carefully consider and edit your responses. Shoot for submitting it between now the and 19th (the earlier the better so you can focus on any last minute prepping for the DAT). Getting it in before you take your DAT will ensure that your app is complete and can be looked at the moment your DAT scores get in (2-3 weeks). Good luck!

Dental students from UNC always seem so down-to-earth and helpful... makes me want to go there even more!

DGDDS or sarah_bellum... do you guys know if UNC's adcom has a particular preference for length of responses on their supplemental? I know that ideally, responses should be well-thought out but concise, but I have fairly lengthy responses for a few of the prompts (particularly for the first question... "Give your reasons for your interest in dentistry..." ...I think this is understandable). I've re-read and edited multiple times, but it still seems really long to me... do you think UNC's adcom could be "turned off" by this?

Haha, we can't think like adcoms!

But I can tell you what I did: Mine were about medium in length, depending on the question. I would think that how you word your essays is more important than the amount of space it takes to express it. They don't want to read a 10 page essay for every response, but you need to be clear and get your point across. If it takes you a couple of more sentences to do that, then I'd say go for it!

The whole purpose of the application is to get to know you on a deeper level than the generic AADSAS app can provide. That is why they place a lot of emphasis on the supplemental. In fact, in my interview, they took all of the questions they asked me directly from a print out of my supplemental application. If you feel like you've edited it multiple times and are pleased with the result, I would go ahead and submit and stop sweating it. 🙂 Good luck!

that sounds great, I'll be sure to make the responses personal and thorough.

One more thing, since both of you have been accepted to UNC and probably know a lot about what their admissions committee looks for...Would either of you mind reading over my personal statement? I submitted it to AADSAS already of course, but I would love to hear your opinion of it. I am not sure how original/unique it is, but hopefully it is interesting. I have had several profs and such read it, but no actual accepted dental students!

Regarding the length of responses, I answered with a paragraph or two for the lengthy ones, and with sentences for those questions where it seemed appropriate.

I cringe when I go back and read my PS. It was craptacular. I'd offer to read yours, but I'm afraid my sense of crapularity isn't as well-honed as I'd once thought. Trust DDGDGDGDGS. That guy/girl's probably a genius.
