I haven't been accepted, but I may have a chance at both. If that happens then which one should I go with. I liked both schools, but could some of you guys comment about the SCHOOLS. I realize its going to be cold in Buffalo, but other than that...other positives and negatives of each school.

Thank you very much,

I interviewed at both. I would probably go to UNC mainly because it's warmer and a bit less boring.

PS Damnn...'em buffalo wings at Buffalo were tasty..eh?

Yes the wings were gr8. But about the schools which one do you guys think is better, which would give a better clinical exposure????

Both are amazing, no matter how you choose, they are both among the top 15 schools nation wide in my opinion. UNC has a better name though if you look at world and U.S. rankings. I wish I had gotten in.

well, I think that in terms of clinical exposure and experience, I would pick the school with a larger population (Buffalo -285,000) compared with UNC (49,000) granted, UNC had many surrounding cities (eg. durham), I would pick buffalo. A larger population usually means that there is a larger potential patient base. This is especially true with Temple, tons of patients!

I really think you should choose the school that you really like instead of looking at the name. I'm from UNC and I think it's a great school but don't go here because of the name, go here because you like it.

I just felt that Buffalo did a great job selling itself. They broke down how each year would look like (pie chart), unlike UNC. Also since Buffalo's interview was on a Friday, I was able to see students in action, when I was given a tour. At UNC one student said a few things about UNC that were a bit negative, but nobody said anything bad about Buffalo other than the weather. All I know is that both are great schools; Buffalo is a bit more expensive, even for instate students. One thing that sticks in my mind is that the students at UNC said that other students are very competitive and some may help, but most don't. But at Buffalo, it just seemed like a jolly land. I don't know, my perception, I guess.

My personal preference is Buffalo (maybe b/c I like NY a lot). However, I've heard really good things about UNC and you definitely can't beat the weather.

i agree! but you can always find a study group where everyone is nice and willing to work together at UNC

Try searching for both Buffalo and UNC in this forum and the dental one; in the past few months, a lot of discussions have gone on about both schools and you'll find lots of great info from current students. (I'd repeat it, but it's all there for the searching.)

B-U-F-F-A-L-O!!!!! Don't think about it, just shuffle off to Buffalo. THey offer the NERB... You take what UNC offers and you are stuck in central or south unless you go to another school for the exam? Is this true?
Buffalo is one of the most underrated places around. We have it all here except for employment, but as a dentist, you shouldn't have a problem with that.

NaCl, why did you pick vcu over buffalo? You have posted several times that you love buffalo. Just wondering.

I have been to both schools and looked at both....there is nothing special about buffalo that jumps out at you and says I want to go there. Buffalo is a dental school, no more no less. I live about 5 minutes away from UNC dental school, and while visiting other dental schools I think UNC is an okay dental school. The facilities are better here. If I have to pick between the two, I would probably lean towards UNC.

Thanks for noticing. My entire family is in Buffalo and it is where I was born and raised. The more I think about leaving (again) the more I think of things I'm going to miss like family, friends, great summers, the lake, jetskiing, skiing, playing in the snow, rollerblading/biking/running on WELL PAVED paths/streets I'm familiar with etc. I can't find any sidewalks outside of downtown Richmond and every paved area I have found there, has been pitted and pot hole laden. Fact of the matter is VCU has been great to me and my husband NEEDS to be in Virginia to accomplish his goals of being a photographer in N.VA/DC (he lived there for 5 yrs before we married and I dragged him to Buffalo kicking and screaming.) Buffalo has little to offer him. I get the impression UB doesn't want much to do with me anyway. Bottom line, I need to be in VA. While I love both cities, I have heard (from John Maxwell) you've got to give up to go up.

PS Congrats on your acceptances. Take care of Buffalo for me 😉
