Hey, I need some serious help. I was recently accepted to UNC and just finished an interview MCPHS and I am very torn. I am wanting to go into community pharmacy, and I would hopefully like to translate in an hispanic community.

I really liked MCPHS when I was there, they are only 3 years for Pharm D. and they have a professor who specialized in pharmacy in the hispanic community. However, I have heard a great deal of negative things about MCPHS and I am worried about getting burned out in an advanced program since I have been in school for 5 years already. Tuition here is $32,000 a year and with living expenses, I'm a little over whelmed.

I also liked UNC, but not as much as MCPHS. However, I felt likethis program would be much more enjoyable for me since I would be repeating a few classes and I would not be as stressed out since I would have summer breaks. I also have family in the area and I would love to be near them. The program is four years long though, and I'm not sure it would be as easy to focus on my Spanish there. Tuition here is also $32,000 for out of state, but I am hoping to get in-state tutition (12,000) after my PY-1 year.

Can anyone available please give me some advise!! I don't know what to do and I am worried that I will make a decision and regret it. Any and all advice would be welcome. Thanks

Only you can truly decide which place will be best for you. I interviewed at MCPHS back in November and talked to 3 students after I was done. They all said that the curriculum was tough, but totally do-able. They made it sound like you just end up sacrificing a little bit of your social life, but that's expected. I found the students biggest complaint to be the lack of things to do in Worcester. When I asked if this was a fun place to be they all kind of rolled their eyes and said that they usually travel to Boston on the weekends. Then again, this is going to vary from person to person because of individual interests. Personally, I like going out to the bars and being social, and I didn't get the impression that there was a lot of that going on at MCPHS (pharmforme could clarify what the social scene is really like.)

On the other hand, the fact that MCPHS has a professor who specializes in pharmacy in the hispanic community is huge. After all, this is your career, and it seems like it would be beneficial for you to work with him/her.

Try not to let money be the deciding factor (if you can!) Go with your gut feeling and try to remember how you felt while visiting each school. Whatever you decide, have confidence that it is the right decision! Both are good schools and are going to give you what you want- a Doctor of Pharmacy degree!

Best of luck... when do you have to make a decision by?

I visited MCPHS in the beginning of this month, and I loved it. It is my first choice. I definitely like the fact that it’s only 3 years, and basically all the pharmacy schools cost about the same amount. If you think that you can handle the accelerated program, then definitely go for it. But if you are worried about burning out, I would say you may be better off playing it safe and doing the regular program. And it’s always a plus to have family around. You should do whatever you think you will enjoy more. Good Luck! 😉

I am finishing up my first year at UNC and I can tell you that I love it. The courseload is manageable, and the program is extremely organized and offers diverse opportunities, and there are many opportunities to work in underserved communities. I moved to the area, but I do love it. As an out-of-stater I can tell you not to plan on getting in state tuition after your first year because the amount of my classmates who have actually accomplished this is extremely low. Let me know if you have any specific questions that I can help you out with. I don't know much about MCP so I can't help much there, but I can tell you the training experience and prestige of UNC will take you far.
