Hey I have a couple questions about Pharmacy school. Right now, I am a high school senior and will graduate in June 2009, and start college (undergrad) in the fall of that year.

My first question is, is pre pharmacy necessary or recommened to get into a pharmacy school? When a was applying to college a couple months ago, I noticed a couple of them didn't have pre pharmacy as a major (actually, only one did). If it is not required, what other major do you guys recommend I take to prepare myself and give me a better chance to get into a pharmacy school?

Also, can someone give me some sort of rough timeline from now to I apply to a pharm school? Like is it something like...

  • Undergrad school (2 years? what courses?)
  • PCAT
  • Anything else..
  • Apply to pharmacy program/school etc
Thanks in advance to anyone that helps. 😀

Pre pharmacy isn't a major at most colleges, it's just an (assumed) emphasis where you take all the pre-requisites for pharmacy school. Most people major in sciences since many courses overlap with degrees but there are people who don't major with sciences and just do the pre-reqs.

To answer everything in short, search the forum. There is a ton of information here and I'm sure if you browse long enough you will find most - if not all - your questions answered.

I agree that searching throughout the forum is the best way to do it but maybe he wants our opinions. Here is mine:

I am currently going to UCD (University of Colorado Denver) and they have the pre pharm program which is actually (like what eightonesix said) not a degree but it is only to prepare us to get into pharmacy school by finishing the pre reqs (like chem 1 and 2 with lab and bio 1 and 2 with lab etc...). My school requires us to finish 90 credits in 3 years. most classes are 3 credits and others can be 4 if the class has lab together. Also, remember that gpa matters so you need at least a 3.0 gpa cummulative. The PCAT is a test and that is important too because it is like the ACT but for pharmacy schools. There is a another forum explaining more about what the PCAT will cover.

Good luck!!
