Hello all. I am sure that many of you, like myself, have taken out loans during undergrad prior to attending dental school. I graduated in December and I am currently in the grace period, but that is scheduled to end June 15. I am starting dental school July 1. I am trying to find out what I can do to delay payment since I will be starting school again and unable to start paying these loans. The website where I view all of my loans says " If you go back to school, you can obtain a deferment so you can temporarily postpone payments." But I see no information on how to obtain that deferment. Is that something we go to the financial aid office about at our school or how does that work? Thanks for any help.

On the student loan website, there is a very useful tool that you can live chat with an expert. She/he will be able to answer your question.

From what I know, once you start ds they will send over the necessary information to salliemae and that automatically will put your loan in deferment. You dont have to fill out a form or anything.

If you want to double check, just call them and they will explain it to you.

If you can't get a hold of anyone through the loan website, I'd call the dental school financial aid office. They should be able to guide you through the correct process.

My grace period ended this month, (and interest has begun accumulating) but my first payment isn't officially due until april. So, it seems there is a two month grace period after your official grace period has ended

So I know we can defer these loans. My question is...how quickly can we defer them after we gain acceptance? Can we defer right away or do we have to wait until classes start?

you have to be a current student.

Deferment takes place after classes start for sure.

My grace period ended in December. My first payment wasn't due until the end of January, but I consolidated in the beginning of January and my payment wound up not being due until mid-February.

So I'm pretty sure that those 15 days won't be a big deal, because your payment will not yet be due anyway.
