So the topic of the cost of dental school is of course a frequent hot topic on this site, however, I was wondering how many students entering dental school have loans from their undergraduate education? This is especially interesting for those who are/will be attending the expensive private institutions, or if the majority of students out there were lucky enough to have their undergrad paid for? I was lucky enough to get into my state school but will have undergrad loans as well so my loans will balance out to about what a private dental school would've cost me.:scared:

I'll have about 30-35k from undergrad + post-bacc...

My dental school will cost me approx: 260k + another 40-50k living expense = 300k+ in loan

Overall = 330-350k

I wish I had all my undergrad paid for. I was fortunate enough to play on a Basketball Scholarship at a junior college for two years but i have loans for the remainder of my undergrad. After its all said and done I'll be in the range of $450K 😱 which includes cost of living during Dschool.

Others have done it before me and were successfull so I'm not to worried about it.

I was fortunate enough to graduate college debt free.
I will, however, have about 20-25K in loans for my post-bacc by the time I'm finished.

future dental school debt is a whole other beast...

(p.s. I'm glad threads like these exist. the prospect of drowning in educational loan debt at such an early age is stressful. However, it's good to know I'm not alone 🙂)

I had no loans for undergrad but I am going to attend a private dental school (Nova) so I'd be around $250k in debt when I graduate. And I will still be living at home so no loans for living expenses.

I think the majority graduates undergrad with debt...

Don't worry, I used to worry about it too until I realized all the debt values are relative.

whoa... only 250k? is that with living expense?

I still owe 7k for dental assisting👎
I have a student loan for 26k for undergrad. And I still paid 30k out of pocket for my education!😡

I will be living at home so I don't have to pay for rent or anything...

same here... But I am still allocating about 10k a year for my basic appliances (credit card bill, gas money, occasional date(s) ~ if I have any), etc..... I can't expect mommy & daddy to cover that 🙁

LOL! Your post was funny. But my parents will be covering all of my expenses (unrelated to dental school) for 4 more years. After that, I will be taking care of them 🙂

yeh I didn't mean to sound silly lol

Thats totally understandable, its financially sound to stay at home, your saving like 20-30k a year.

I have no undergrad loans. I was lucky to go to a cheep Canadian University with cheep living expenses along with many opportunities for scholarships. I will start dental school in my State school that will cost me about $250,000 including living expenses.

Has anyone look into the differences between private and federal loans?
Is it easy to apply for a private loans and do the lenders lend you the sum of for all four years of DSchool or just one year at the time?

Most of us will not get our financial aid package until mid May, but I thought it is wise to start worrying about this now?

I was pretty determined to graduate with no debt, and a tiny bit of savings to my name. That's why I worked my ass off in high school to get a great scholarship at UA, didn't even considered going anywhere else, and worked part-time during undergrad. Considering I'm going to NYU, I'm pretty nervous about the debt.

I've used bankrate.com a lot for financial stuff, I'm pretty sure they have a college finance section. But I think federal loans are almost always a better deal.

It seems to me that the largest loan you'll get from the government is the graduate plus loan, which I believe depends on your credit. So unless you have poor credit, federal loans will probably cover everything. NYU has sent out financial aid, and the federal loans cover everything for me.
