Hello,

Sorry if I seem sheepish from being a new member, but I've been lurking for quite a while and decided it was high time I joined myself. I understand the importance of research for an undergrad, and so I'm taking on every available opportunity to find some. I'm currently a sophomore in college, but unfortunately, I live in an incredibly small town that has no teachers with doctorates or much research focused work.

I recently was accepted for an internship with the Cancer Advocacy Network to do research and non-scholarly publications for the neuroscience area. I have three questions from this.

1. Will Medical Schools look down on my application for an online research project?

2. Will a non-scholarly publication really matter?

3. If I have no teachers on campus willing to do research or support research activities(as it's a community college), how else could I go about finding some? Every teacher I've contacted or approached about seeking and doing research has shied away from the topic and refused to encourage it, either because they simply don't believe/trust it or the fact that none of the professors on my personal school campus are very knowledgeable of my interest areas, though there are nearby universities (1 hour drive max) that have many experts in the fields I'm interested in researching.

Yeah... this is interesting.

I would think that math/computation biology/ theoretical physics etc research is more acceptable to undergo without using a lab.

But what you are doing right now is definitely better than doing nothing.

In my view, the non scholarly article will definitely not be as impressive.

My advice would be to just play the hand you are dealt the best you can by continuing to seek out benchwork and giving the online research your all.

thanks for responding! yes, I was worried about that. Do you think I should consider just committing more to my ECs and shadowing at this college and throw myself into research after I transfer to a more formed university, or attempt to contact the nearby university about participation?
