Anyone ever take undergrad. research just to get a LOR from a professor?

I'd hope there would be other motives for an individual to do research with a professor... such as being interested in what the professor does or gaining added lab experience. Getting a LOR is just an added perk of forming a relationship with a professor, which doesn't necessarily have to happen through a research student/mentor relationship. Also, research with a professor doesn't always mean a strong LOR unless you do good work.
 
choose a lab where you will be interested in the subject it is studying. I have been doing research in a lab at the dental school for 2 years and most of my academic success has come after I joined the lab. It has been an amazing experience and i wouldnt exchange it for anything.
