Are your chances any better getting into a medical school if you have attended the same school for undergrad? I am trying to choose between VCU (which is closer to my husbands work, closer to my family, and with cheaper places to live) and UVA (which is a much better school, but I would have to drive an hour and a half one way each day, and try to find someone to watch my kids).

They both have med schools attached to them. Do I stand a better chance of getting into one or the other if I attend their school for my bachelors degree?

Even if you do, it doesn't seem worth the time, expense, and loss of time with your kids. If I were you, I'd go to VCU and use the extra time to get a great GPA and study for a good MCAT score. Then it won't matter that you didn't go to UVA.

This. There can even be a disadvantage. I heard from someone I interviewed with at UVA med that it's harder to get an interview from UVA undergrad because everybody wants to go there and they are more familiar with the school so they can scrutinize your every move in undergrad.

I think that's true if you're comparing a UVA ug to one from a hyp undergrad but not to vcu, there's a pretty clear pecking order in va that UVA is clearly on top of... That said, the op is probably better off at vcu.

I don't think there is usually an advantage of going to that school for undergrad (at least there wasn't for me), at least not only because of the name. It might help you only because the admissions committee knows a lot about that school and the preparation it gives you for med school. But I don't think you should use the possibility of an advantage to decide where to go, I don't think it makes that much of a difference.

Commuting that long would SUCK, and your grades and children would take a hit. I think you're better off with VCU.

Well yeah. I was just saying that at some (but obviously not all) schools w med schools attached it can be harder to get an interview at that med school because of internal competition and familiarity. Some med schools (I think Vandy does this) definitely prefer their own.

Thanks, everyone- Im thinking Im headed to VCU! 🙂

In the course of a week, you went from transferring to Texas in two years to going for VCU or UVA for your bachelors? I'm confused.

I'm a UVa undergrad. I love UVa, didn't apply to VCU for undergrad, but if I had known VCU had a guaranteed med program, I would have done that in a heartbeat. I think you need to maintain a 3.4 or 3.5 and you automatically get an interview or something like that (might wanna read up on it). I have a friend who's in that program and she'd told me the advising and everything there is just fantastic.
