I have planned a schedule after some few minor setbacks to finish my BA at Emory by the end of Fall 2014. I'll have to apply for Dental School for Fall 2015, correct? So what're my options for when I should take my DAT, apply, & what after? I read that one usually applies at the end of their Junior year (June) & takes the DAT after Junior year in the summer, but what're my options? Thanks!

Yes, you cannot start dental school in the spring. A lot of my friends are in your shoes. They are done this semester and they plan to study for the DAT during the spring semester. They will take a gap year since they would take the DAT in May and apply first batch.

I think you are better off studying in the summer of junior year and taking then so you can apply to dental school without having to take a gap year. On my interviews, I talked with students who took gap years, and they said that it was rough going back to school after being off for a year. I don't think you should do that; instead be off for the spring semester unless of course you want to declare a minor or two. I declared 2 minors to prevent this from happening in chemistry and philosophy of science. GL.

Just to clarify: Spring 2013 Summer13 Fall 2013 Spring 2014 Summer14 Fall 2014

You suggest taking the DAT Summer 13'? Fall 13' & Spring 14' is when i'll be taking Orgo, so that's not applicable. Or staying in school till Spring 2015, but tuition is a burden for me. If i take my DAT Summer 14',when should be the earliest I should apply for Fall 15' Dental School? & is that a good idea? Thanks too, I appreciate having people to discuss this with.

I actually suggest taking the DAT summer 14, so you can apply for Fall 15 like you said. I think you should try to take the DAT by July 15th, and have your entire application set up (gpa verified, school designations, etc) so you can just wait 2 weeks for your DAT score. I applied late, but I had high scores so I got in, but a lot of people in my predicament applied too late to get pre-december interviews.

I am in a similar situation as you except that I am taking spring 2014 classes and this fall-spring 2013 I am in ochem. I would not take the DAT without taking ochems, it would be very hard to teach yourself a whole section of the DAT. I'm leaning towards getting the DAT out of the way this summer 2013, but i think you should send your application in summer 2014 as soon as the cycle begins, take the DAT when you are truely ready, and submit your scores hopefully early in the cycle. It will be rough getting all of your application together (personal statement, letters of recommendation, volunteering/shadowing) in the same time period as studying for the DAT, but the good news is you have plenty of time starting now to work on these extracurriculars so you dont have to later. Good luck buddy

I graduated this past May, took my DAT in the summer, and applied. I needed time to study for the DAT and during the fall I continued a post-bacc (undeclared) taking AP 2, micro lab (end up dropping due to interviews), and psychology. Now that I am accepted I want to take endocrinology and cell bio for preparation for didactics even though its not pre-reqs.
