it's pretty common. amcas is designed to handle pluses and minuses by assigning X.7 and X.3 GPA points. for example, an A- is 3.7, and a B+ is 3.3 in the amcas app.

As another Californian, I have to say that the scale is pretty typical. Personally, I think it would've been nice if high schools had a similar scale to diminish the shock of seeing your first quarter grades at university.
 
That's funny, my high school had that same scale... I guess that sort of thing varies a lot.
 
Yah most universities have that.. Its pretty common. My high school used the same scale as well though.
