Sophomore Biochemistry major (just starting 4th semester)
cGPA: 3.95 sGPA: around the same

EMT school at community college, received certificate (went through this without lightening my course load at university, does this improve my odds?)
Also have a CNA license

Shadowing:
220 hours in general, vascular, and trauma surgery, and emergency medicine

Research:
200 hours assisting technician at a neurological institute in high school
130 assisting PI in university's biochemistry lab

Clinical Experience:
Part of EMT school
80 hours in hospital and EMS settings

Volunteering:
Rebuilding homes for a nonprofit organization (20 hrs)
Chemistry TA (15/semester)
Biology tutor (2 semesters)
Hospital volunteer (40 hrs.)
Helping to kick start a podcast orchestrated by a faculty member, I am part of the research department

Plans before applying to Medical School:
Hopefully finding a job as a technician or nurse aid in a clinic or hospital from this summer onward, will work as a CNA if I cannot
Continuing Research and TAing
Testing for a EMT License
Shadow more

Questions:
I was hoping to get some advice on what I should work on before the time I apply.

I feel like I am lacking a lot in volunteering, is it too late to get hours?

Does a lack of a leadership position significantly lower your application?

Is there anything that I'm just completely missing and/ or forgetting?

During applications, should I apply for a DO school as well as MD?

Would what I have now seem like it has the potential to get in? I would be happy with any school in the US.

If you could answer any of my questions or offer any advice, I would really appreciate it!

1) Yes you are lacking on volunteer, but it is not too late. You can start immediately and accrue in excess of 300 hours by application time.
2) Not significantly if you have other significant ECs, which you do not.
3) You are missing the fact that having CNA and EMT licensing means jack squat if you haven’t worked in the field, which you have not.
4) Based on GPA alone, probably no DOs, unless you get <510 on the MCAT. It is way to early to build a school list.
5) No, what you have now is not enough. No volunteering is bad. Getting two certifications and never working in those fields looks like you were just box checking and trying to add things to your app to bolster it. Having the EMT and CNA in your case will likely act as a negative on your app as opposed to a positive.

THIS!
And stop shadowing, except for getting some hours with a primary care doctor. That will free up time for you to get your ECs in line. You have time but you need to make some changes and refocus soon.

Need MCAT to know competitiveness for md. Get 150 total hours of each clinical and non clinical hours. You only needed 50 shadowing hours.
