so im in the military . ill be getting out in 2011. and i can finally start school this year. i want to go to med school eventually , but im not sure of what i should do about my undergraduate degree. i know it doesnt really matter what i graduate in as long as i have all the classes i need to get into med school. but wouldnt it look better if i went for something in that bio, science field? .. i always wanted to go to school for early child development .. would that not look good? since it doest have much to do with medicine?

The last doctor that I worked for majored in English with a concentration in creative writing as an undergraduate. He is a well known emergency medicine physician in my state and to some extent nationally.

I'm a relatively new pre-med student, and all of the doctors that I've worked with have told me to choose a major that I like. An attending that I met a year ago told me that medical schools are actually looking for more non-science majors. Her reasons were all related to people skills. I'm sure that some people on here may disagree.

BOTTOM LINE: I would stick with early child development if that is what your passionate about. If you find yourself on the lower end of the science GPA requirement, then you may find it more difficult to get accepted then if you were a science major (bio/chem). Worst case scenario, you never get accepted or you lose interest in medicine then you'll already have the education for a career in early child development.

So when you say early child development, do you mean like linguistics or developmental biology? I think you could integrate your interests in child development with a biology major (just have that be your focus) ... maybe with some behavioral bio and psych classes. Perhaps you could even get some lab experience in that area as well. I think it definitely has something to do with medicine (if I understand your interests correctly). Do you have any idea what you'd like to do with an M.D. (i.e. research, pediatrician, etc.) yet?

I'm not sure what classes you were talking about in child development that wouldn't be counted as bio classes (but I'm definitely not experienced in this area). I think the short answer though is yes...as long as you do well in your prerequisites it doesn't matter what you major in. However, I think that you could definitely tie your interests back into science / medicine even if the classes weren't "BCPM" and have a more cohesive app. Best of luck in the process, and I hope I understood your question. If not please give more details.

go for child development if that's what you're interested in. If you are interested in going into pediatrics I would actually say it would be very useful. Even if you aren't, do it anyway. As stated above schools don't care if you didn't major in the sciences as long as you took the pre-reqs, did well in them, and do well on the MCAT. In fact, a lot of them really do look for applicants who majored in something outside the sciences.
