Hello everyone,

I was talking to my organic professor yesterday, and after we finished discussing a problem he asked me why I haven’t been actively looking for a research opportunity for over the summer. I was totally taken off guard; I told him that I didn't know how the process of getting into a research position works. So he gave me the low down on how to go about it and who to talk to.

I was also wondering if anyone else did research before you got into pharmacy school?...

Heck No... I sold mortgages for 6 months before starting pharmacy school.
Easy money..

I'm sure many have done research and many have not. If you're interested in the summer research program, by all means do it. But don't do it if you look at it only as a way to build a resume. Find work or volunteer opportunities that mean something to you and they will be more likely to mean something to admissions committees or employers in the future. If you're interested in pharmacy, try to find some opportunities to work in or volunteer in a pharmacy.

I did undergraduate research before applying to pharmacy school. I think it helped me get in. It shows you can work in a team and apply knowledge. I didn't have any pharmacy experience. I think this can help show you are unique because not many students do research. Plus a lot of the pharmacy faculty is involved in these type of activities.

If you are interested, by all means go for it. If you are not then it is going to be a long summer because research is very time consuming.

I did 15 credits of undergraduate research in an Organic Chemistry Lab before applying to pharmacy school. It was a really good experience and made me realize research wasn't for me. My professor wrote my LOR and I think that helped. I just think it depends on the person, I definately don't think it's required.
