Hi I am a 19 year old currently going to a community college getting my A.S. in Biological Science and am planning on transferring to a 4y college to get my B.S. I plan to go to Med school and study to be a dermatologist. What are the best undergraduate schools near the DMV (DC, MD, VA) that would accept me with a GPA of about 3.78 at the moment? I researched a lot but not many people are helpful in testifying why they liked a specific school or which school had the best professors.

I am pretty sure most cities have a DMV. Renewal of your driver’s license shouldn’t be an issue in undergrad. /s

In reality, unless you go to HPYSC type schools, undergrad matters less and less. Any flagship state school will be better prep-wise than a small state school. Avoid private unless it is a known powerhouse as they vary so much in mission and tend to cost a lot more. Sorry I cannot be of more help!

Lol DMV = DC, Maryland, Virginia. But OP I don’t think you’ll have an issue transferring into the undergraduate university of your choice. If you’re from the area, it might be easier to transfer to a school with in your state.

I’d agree with this except for the part about LACs. LACs can be great options and are often overlooked because they are smaller but they can have great fináid, much smaller class sizes which in general provide much better learning environments and more opportunities to form relationships with mentors and faculty. The only disadvantage at LACs is little home research opportunities but depending on the LAC that might not matter all that much either and plenty of students from LACs find research opportunities externally or over the summer. Plenty of people on the trail, even on the MD/PhD side from top LACs. If I could do college all over again, I’d probably apply to more LACs and skip the Ivy League all together which is more of a crapshoot.

Go anywhere that gives you ample opportunities and you can do well. Much more important to have a well rounded and complete app from a lesser school than go to a better school where you have to claw and fight for opportunities and then not get as many experiences. Also don’t get buried in debt in UG.

Just my 2 cents.

Do you have any advisors at your CC? Do they have any advice about where grads of your school go on for further study? Does your school ever sponsor college fairs where admissions people/recruiters from schools come to promote their school.

Have you ever looked at Rate My Professor? Most people use it to decide what elective courses to take or which section of a required course to take but you might find it helpful in evaluating schools you might be considering.

What state are you from? Are you at all interested in a historically black college or university?

lol. "study to be a dermatologist". You and every other med student in the entire country. What about dermatology interests you? If you can't do derm what are you going to do? Quit med school?
Do you ever see a big ass pimple right in the middle of someone’s forehead that you just can’t stand? It is big. It is distracting. I must pop it. Go away, foul puss-filled beast.

I have never felt that way, but I know people who constantly do. Those are the kinds of passionate people we need as dermatologists.

I can definitely see that perspective. If the support and/or resources are there then the size/mission of the institution doesn’t matter as much.

Sorry, I am from Washington state. My idea of a LAC is Green River LAC where the students petition for removal of the intro sciences because they are patriarchal and where mandatory “No white men on campus” is a thing. So maybe I should expand my LAC knowledge lol

Yes, maybe you should. The LACs I often think of include schools such as Amherst, Middlebury, and Williams. Also Vassar, Smith and Bryn Mawr. They are some of the most competitive schools in the country in terms of admissions.

Thanks for the info! I always forget how competitive even undergrad gets. I went high school —> Army —> state school with guaranteed admissions for residents of a rural county so pardon my ignorance of the subject! Edited out the LAC part
