I love this forum and can't get enough of reading the conversations and everyone is great with the responses.
BUT, being an undergraduate only in my first semester, I feel a little dis qualified to participate!
I'm also 37, wife, mother of 2, career changer....and feel just a tad bit intimidated 🙁...

I would love to start a Thread for those of you like me, just getting started in this exciting career.

Questions
1.) What semester are you currenlty in as an undergrad?
2.) Have you decided on your career choice? (Phd, MSW, Pys.D, MA, etc.)
3.) Have you been envolved in any volunteer/early intership programs?
4.) What made you change or go into this career?

my answers
1.) First Semester, Pyschology 101!
2.) I want to go for the gusto, PHD
3.) I currently volunteer at a Mentally Health Center and for a Domestic Violence Womens Crisis Center
4.) I choose this career because I've set in a office for 15 years staring blankly at my computer, giving free advice to my co-works and friends. I also love talking and encouraging others!!! 😍

Please add questions, concerns, rewards, struggles, etc.

I really do appreciate the advice from our Senior Members, so please feel free to post your undergrad expericence as well!

Thanks all! 🙄

Lovely idea for a thread 🙂

I'm 21 years old ( will be 22 in May ) , no kids , but will be a step mom to my b/fs 6 yr old son, and am engaged , first time career attempt . However has changed career possibilities like 10,000 times lol. Don't feel intimidated , I have felt that way too but you will feel right at home over time .

1. If accepted : Psychology 101 : General Psychology ( First Semester ) along with other basic courses .

2. I'm going for my PH.D . I'm starting on my BA first then MA then PH.D . Long way to go !

3. Not yet but I plan on doing some this summer , so hopefully I'll come back with news ! :scared:

4. I choose this profession because I thus far help alot of people just by talking , giving advice and observing human behavior . I can sense people's feelings and have a way with working with them , no matter what type of emotion . I do find the human mind , the way it works , and it in general fascinating . I also make people think and view their own lives differently and more positively .

If i think of any questions to add I shall post them :luck:

Hm, Let's see.

Questions
1.) 8th, I suppose- I'm a spring-term senior in undergrad.
2.) Planning on getting an MSW at Smith College, beginning June 1.
3.) I interned in a Behavioral Health Unit, as well as a summer working in a youth facility for incarcerated teens (read: prison).
4.) I really enjoyed working with people, especially the kids, and my region of the US has a shortage of social workers. I've done research (nearly three years now), and while I like it, it's not something I can picture doing for the rest of my life. Since I'm planning to work with a specific population, it made more sense to me to get an MSW rather than a Ph. D. (an MSW is less expensive and gets me into the workforce sooner. Plus no dissertation).

what's wrong with giving free advice to co-workers of friends? why is everything quantified in terms of money these days, it seems like therapists and psychologists are always trying to make profit out of something that is just common sense....where is this field going these days??

Wow. I never went into it for the money. I guess I just don't have any common sense, because I'm going into it so I can get the training I need.

I'm sorry if I sound defensive, but I'm a little bit offended that you're implying that all of therapy is common sense (common sense treatment to schizophrenia?) and that a therapist or Ph. D. psychologist is just in it for the money. Some of us love working with people so much that we want to be able to do it full time.

Serious cases of psychopathology cannot be treated with just "common sense."

Despite the fact that you're just trolling trying to irritate people, here's a brief history of the world:

Money is used to represent value to trade goods and services. Therapy qualifies as a service.

Education costs money, living costs money.

Education makes better, more responsible psychologists and therapists.

Thus, they receive payment because they are sacrificing time and have sacrificed money of their own in order to help others.

1.)I'm on the cusp of starting my Bachelor of Science- all possible comm. college courses complete.
2.)I'd like to be a therapist.
3.)No, I'm looking for them though
4.)Realizing that all social problems stem from people who let their negative emotions run their lives. Psychology is the best science to address it.
