Hi there,

I'm brand new to posting to the forums here--great resource!

Questions about underrepresented applicants: 1) Does each school define this differently? 2) Are relatively older age and female gender considered to be underrepresented factors?

Cheers,
Kirsteen

older applicants Underrepresented!....hah!:

only if your ancestors came over in chains

The American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) defines Underepresented Minorities (URM) as:

blacks, Mexican Americans, Native Americans (American Indians, native Hawaiins, and Alaska natives), and mainland Puerto Ricans.

That's all she wrote.

There are currently other groups petitionting the AAMC to be included in the URM definition including Pacific islanders and southeast Asians.

Thanks for that, mpp.

Cheers,
Kirsteen

Why is that East Asians such as Chinese, Korean, Japanese, etc. are not part of this group? Are they part of a majority now?

URM statis is designated to those groups that are underrepresented in medicine when compared to their percentage of the general population. So, East Asians may still be a minority in the general population, but they are not underrepresented in medicine.

Same holds true of South Asians. It all depends on the relative percentage of physicians compared to the relative percentage of the general population.
