"UNE CDM’s 4th year curriculum requires up to 3 separate 12-week rotations in underserved rural northern New England, likely requiring you to live away from the Portland area for 3 months at a time. Discuss strategies you would employ to succeed within this externship requirement." I have no clue what this is really asking me. Can anyone explain it, please?

Thank you!

Thank you!

These externships can be super remote. They also require you to work with much less supervision than you will be used to at that point.

If you feel that the loneliness of being in BFE away from your friends and loved ones might be difficult, address that. If you feel like it will be a challenge to see case after case all day with limited opportunities for consultation, address that. If you feel like it will be a challenge for you to live out there for potentially 9 months where there isn’t much to do and the internet access probably sucks, address that.

It could be as simple as saying that you would spend more time reading and cooking for yourself. Just think of any challenge you might encounter and then think how you would approach that challenge.

Hey, I called the person that coordinates the externship and asked him what it is like. He told me that most of the 4th year students drive back to Portland on the weekends, so you should be able to see your family or SO once a week. A lot of us have had to move to another city for work or have lived overseas, so I am not sure what the big whoop is. The person that I spoke with told me that cell phone service and internet, shouldn't be an issue. I'm sure the externship will require reports or homework to be turned in through the week, so I don't think they will send students off to a location so remote that they have to break out their Iridium satellite phone to call their mom.
