Anyone from that group hear from UNECOM yet?
 
Just got back from Maine, - had my interview at UNECOM today. Was told that the admission commettee did not meet after New Year yet. They will be meeting some time this week so you and those who had an interview last week should hear from them next week. So, be patient, it will come eventually.....😀

Like I mentioned before, I am from MA and they have preferences for New England residents. My stats are pretty high for them (accept for MCAT 🙁 ). Anyway, waiting to hear back from them next week. About the school, well.... I would not say that I like it, but I also would not say that I dislike it completely. The school is just one building (don't get me wrong, the university itself has many buildings, but just one for us 😀). School building is pretty new and has huge aquarium with fish swimming in it. The OMM room was very crawdad (it seems like all students were there at the same time when we were passing through). The kind of main road goes through the university territory and people who have houses closer to the ocean drive through. Biddeford is small provincial town, has everything you need (malls, shops, restaurants, etc.), but absolutely nothing to do (which kind of is a good thing because you will spend all your free time when you are not at school from 8 to 5 studying 😀). You have to rent and apartment there (no dorm), but rent is very cheap compare to Boston (I saw $500 for 1 BR and $675 for 2BR), but you will need and SUV because the winter is awful over there!
Long story short, if I won't be able to get into any medical schools in US (I already declined ROSS and AUC, and have my SABA and SGU interviews shortly) and they accept me I most likely will go there, but try to take and MCAT one more time and apply as early as possible next year to US medical again (if my MCAT scores will be higher then now 🙁 ). I also applied to PCOM and if they accept me I will go there instead of UNECOM just because I wanted to become an Anesthesiologist or Pathologist.
I will keep you posted if I get something from them.
 
FYI: the next admissions committee meeting is 1/31.

And FYI #2: you don't need an SUV. I have a regular four door sedan that's 10 years old and it goes just fine (and I just have regular all-season radial tires - no snow tires, no studs). I've never slid off the streets, never skidded on the ice, and the streets get plowed regularly during storms. Even the subdivisions and side streets. The winter's aren't really awful at all (unless you're from Hawaii or somewhere else that never gets snow). As for the OMM lab - yes, you were there when the entire MSI class was having OMM. Combine that with one MSII for every two tables of MSIs being TAs, and you had 200 people in that room. Not counting fellows and actual instructors. I'm sure in your overwhelmed state it seemed more crowded than normal. 🙂

Like I said before, I like the school. Crows does not scare me at all, was just surprised to see them all at the same place at the same time.
In regards to SUV, I am from MA and I know what snow is. You definitely need an SUV in Maine! Monday, when we were driving in, major roads were more or less clear, but only we turned into the road to the hotel, here it starts! That road was covered with thick layer of snow and ice! Nobody even though to plow it! If we did not have an SUV, we would stack at the bottom of that road! And next morning, when we were driving to school, Rt.111 and Rt.9 were clean and dry, but back roads (some of which were hills) still covered with snow and ice.
And yes, you can drive a 10 years old regular sedan; you also can ride a bike or even walk! You can live with tigers and sharks; you can work at HIV clinic taking care of contagious patients. You can do a lot of things and be lucky. You can play with fire and if you get burn blame the company that there were no sign about that on the box of matches! But it is your safety and it is up to you how to protect yourself in different situations.

runin: they could have - but it's on the campus-wide schedule for the 31st. Not to say they didn't have one that wasn't on the schedule... It's happened before.

Slavia: I lived in Colorado before this, so I too know what "snow is". However, I drive back and forth to school every day from the other side of Biddeford and did so the day you had your interview. I even (heaven forbid) have a hill to go up on my way there. I repeat: I don't have an SUV, just a mere four door sedan with no four wheel drive, no snow tires, and no studded snow tires, and I have yet to have a problem. I think "you need to have an SUV" is rather.. um.. overkill. Just be smart, drive smart, and you'll be just fine. Oh - and I went to the store just after the last snowfall. Not a problem driving. Really.
 
Each person entitled to have their own opnion! But I still think that SUV is the only safe car to drive in Maine.
If accepted I most sertainly will buy myself one.

You could become either at UNECOM as well. The folks I know that wanted to match to anesthesiology, matched to anesthesiology. There was only one person in my class interested in pathology, and she matched to pathology. I wouldn't discount UNECOM if you want to specialize. Each year, folks generally match to their specialty of choice.

Same here. In fact, when I've had to drive in a blizzard in the northeast I did fine without an SUV.

I was a student at UNECOM (graduated last year). Prior to med school was living in Massachusetts.

An SUV with 4x4 would be a little easier yes... but the BIGGEST difference you're going to find when driving in the weather up here in your tires. I'd take a honda civic sized car with good all season tires EVERY SINGLE TIME over an SUV with old tires... In fact I need to go sometime soon and get some new tires on my car. If you have to buy a car, looking at SUVs wouldn't be a bad idea. I'd love to have one of those new CR-V's... however, if you already have a car, there's no real need to get rid of it. Remember that it only snows 5"ish" out of 12 months throughout the year, and your gas mileage is going to be a lot worse in an SUV during those times that you don't really need it. don't just think about the winter, because contrary to popular belief, it's not always winter up here... 😉

No worries! I chose EM as my specialty (volunteering as an EMT got my interest back to medicine). I felt I had plenty of options, and selected EM. As far as finding a residency, I was interested in the east coast and received interviews all over the east coast. All the EM programs I interviewed at were strong. The RRC for EM has done an excellent job of ensuring that. As for returning to Massachusetts or the northeast, we'll see what jobs pique my interest. I feel I could easily return to the northeast, once I complete residency. The program I'm at has alot of faculty strong in their particular fields (e.g. EMS, disaster medicine, ultrasound, international medicine, etc.).

If you choose to go to UNECOM and work hard, you will likely match to the specialty of interest. No matter what school you decide to attend, as long as you work hard, you will likely match to your specialty of interest.

I knew 6 D.O.s prior to med school and was very impressed with their ability to relate with their patients, as well as their knowledge (3 were internal medicine, 1 nephrologist, 1 Orthopedic, 1 EM). So with that experience, I opted to apply only to D.O.


Also to clear up a statement I made early about, "No matter what school you decide to attend, as long as you work hard, you will likely match to your specialty of interest." I would mention that there are some specialties where being a D.O. will create hurdles for getting into an allopathic residency as they are still old school (e.g. dermatology, neurosurgery, ophthalmology). Realize, though, that D.O.'s have their own residencies in these specialities (and others), but there are fewer geographical locations from which to choose.

That's very cool Wook. Sounds like you are happy and in a great location. I'm curious about your northeast interviews for residencey, and you can PM me if you'd like also. But did you think it was very difficult to get a residencey in Boston with a DO background? I was looking at the match list they gave us at the UNECOM interview and it looks like there weren't many students who got matched in Boston hospitals.I wasn't sure if that was because the DO creates a bit of a hurdle, or due to/in addition to the possibility that not that many people in that class found it desireable to be in Boston?
 
I've yet to hear from them post interview so these may be premature questions....

I can't provide you with an accurate answer. In my case, as I recall, the Boston EM programs were 4 years in length. I wanted to do a 3 year program. Additionally, cost of living was a significant factor, which eliminated some cities (e.g. New York, Boston, D.C., etc).

I can't really address the match list you received. Keep in mind that match lists can be deceiving. Each year different people may want certain specialties or certain areas, so each year will be different.

Realistically, if you work hard and do well, you will likely match into a specialty of interest in an area that you would prefer. As you indicated, it is a little early in the game to be worrying about this. You may change your mind on where you want to be as you progress through school because you may develop an interest in a program that offers something that is exactly what you are looking for.

Hey Slavia, take a chill pill, maybe UNE isnt the place for you, you seem way too uptight, UNE is a more relaxed kind of school, people there are way cool..
As far as Boston goes, I know two people out of I would say six in our class who matched Anesthesia that ended up in Boston at St Elizabeth's. I got interviews at St Elizabeths and Tufts in Boston. And put them both at the bottom of my list, due to the fact that living in Boston is too expensive. I have a family and do not want to spend all our money on housing. And we probably wouldnt be able to live in a nice community, and then there is paying for parking, paying for gas b/c the commute is probably nothing but traffic. I love the program I am at in that respect, dont pay for parking no traffic and huge volume of patients.
I dont have enough good things to say about UNE, I loved my time there, I meet a lot of really cool people. The fact that you can study in the library and look out the library window and see sail boats in the ocean out the window is pretty fringin cool or you can even go for a walk by the ocean as a study break from the library. Is it cold? Heck yeah, but I thought it was doable. I would live in Maine for the rest of my life, b/c I loved it, if it werent so cold in the winter. That is probably the only drawback.
Believe me being a DO, you might think, like I used to, ohh I will be a DO people wont know what that means, you know what it dont matter more than two cents. Once you get that degree and your are doing what you love, you barely have the time to talk to anyone, and once you get the time to talk to anyone residency will be over and youll be an attending and by that time who the heck cares? I mean I dont even care now, I personally like the fact that I am a DO, I think it is pretty friggin cool that I know how to do manipulation and all this other stuff... but thats me...
I loved UNE.. I had a great time in Maine.... no I didnt have a SUV but I did have a all wheel drive Subraru and it kicked butt in the snow. And the thing you will realize is that if there is a big storm, they will cancel classes, or you dont have to even go, just get the friggin note service.

Just an update for those anxiously awaiting interview results: if your interview was on or after the week of January 14th, they still reviewing your file and you should be getting something within 7 to 10 days or so.
 
Does anyone know if UNECOM is still scheduling interviews? I haven't heard from them and I was wondering if it was still possible to get an interview, or are they pretty much done. Thanks in advance.
 
Yes, they are. Look above there is a post, someone got an invitation on March i think. Plus, there will be people who even though was accepted will deferred the admissions so you might get a spot.
 
How about those who interviewd on the 9th? I still haven't received a response...are my chances pretty much gone at this point?
