Has anyone heard anything?
I'm applying to med schools and I was talking to students at UNECOM. A student told me that last semester after their pathology exam the dean went in front of everyone and accused the whole class of cheating, either directly or indirectly, and now the students had voted to send a letter to the faculty recommending they take a class in writing exams!!!!! I talked to other students afterward who confirmed this. What's going on?

that is true about the pathology exam, I have no idea what happened with that letter. A second year could probably help you with that a little better...

I withdrew my comment.. since I am not a student there at this time.

docbill- I would hope that there's some responsibility to let me know what I'm getting myself into by going to a particular school and not covering something up so I find out TOO LATE. As future doctors we should not be hiding problems to protect ourselves, and I should have all the facts about a situation before I form a decision- this is called informed consent.

ok, basically what happened was that a bunch of the class got ahold of the pathology exam before the test (on accident, or on purpose, who knows, who cares, doesn't really matter)... so therefore, a bunch of people got HP's on it, the "powers to be" accussed the whole class of cheating, and they changed all the HP's in the class to P's.
I don't think Docbill is hiding anything, i just think that he doesn't feel he should say anything "since I am not a student there" , and I think that is admirable. I barely feel I should say anything since what I know only comes from what MSII's have told us so far this year, but just to let you know about it.
I really don't think it's a big deal in the end. I'd imagine most people just thought it was an old test (we have a BIG binder full of old tests, most people study from the old tests, and people thought it was probably one of those)... it's not a big deal, and if you're going to let this affect your view of the school... well :-/

UNECOM is an excellent school and has an excellent reputation. I did not get this info from SDN, even though there is much support for this. I got the info from DO in the field. Either graduate's of UNE or other institutions.

Hopefuly while I am attending UNE next year.. and for the next 4 years we can make this fact, really clear. By not only scoring above average on exams, but also by becoming great DOs.

thanks tweety for clearing that up...

I'm also an MS2 at UNECOM. The class was reprimanded by the dean after the pathology situation, but Tweety is right in that this was not our fault and nobody knew the old test would be so similar to the new one given. To be fair and transparent though, there is a lot of tension between students and the administration, especially after pathology, we now have to sign for tests, we have teachers locking the doors to mandatory classes to prevent students coming late, the dean during neuroanatomy even threatened not to fix the library printer because 'we' broke it by using it too much, etc etc. There are numerous other examples but this is not the place to go into them. It is true in general students are not too thrilled with the administration, however in any school you're going to find occasional flare-ups of tension with the administration, this is not unique to UNECOM at all and should not detract from us. UNECOM still remains an excellent place to go to medical school, we have an excellent faculty and a friendly atmosphere. When we were first years, the previous years class helped us with tutoring and review sessions and we now do the same to this first years class. People email each other objectives and study materials for classes and genuinely try to help each other learn to be great doctors. I wouldn't let any one situation determine where you will go to school.

And did I mention we're right on the beach? 😍

you transfered.. so cool.. that is the best way to really judge the difference.

I transfered PhD schools and boy... does that make a difference.

Oh BTW... excellent responce. Ohhh I hate that guy... I don't know who it is .. but I am sure I won't like him.

I don't know what the other administration was like where you came from Tweetybird, but I did stress the problems with the one here weren't a big enough deal not to come. DLOVR did accuse docbill of trying to "hide things" though so it probably isn't a good idea to just smile and pretend we're perfect in the hope of getting more recruits. As you may also be aware from trying to park on campus we are relegated to the netherlands making being late sometimes uncontrollable. Also, it is extremely courageous for the student you mention to write letters standing up for the students even though it hurts her chances of a good deans letter. I only hope you have the courage one day to stand up to people in power, HMO's, lawyers, etc. to help your patients, even if it is at the risk of your own career. I hope I have that courage also. Being honest to the readers here is one way in which you will develop that integrity. And as for 'minor blips' not effecting 'one iota of our educational experience', I'm one of the people whose HP was switched to a P, and I would say I've been influenced an iota, wouldn't anyone else?

Just to make it clear. Docbill is not trying to hide anything. I talked to him and he did not think that a small internal issue should be posted and give people the wrong idea about the school.

However, he assured me that he is a person who will not stay silent in unfair situations. Docbill is on many committees and very often would state his position, even at a cost of upsetting the dean (at his institution). He was selected to represent the student body at these committees and if he did not do that, he would not be doing his job.
=====================================================
So where is the student council at UNECOM, what are they doing about it. You have selected them to represent you, than they should ask for your opinion and express it jointly in a letter to the dean. If your student rep is one of these gunners who caused the uproar... it is simple... remove them... it works.

Just a final thing... I am not a student at UNECOM, I will be next year.

I would like to add.. from personal experience.. sometimes you have to pick your fights. You don't need to jump on every issue and fight it to the death. Sometimes it is best to let things go and wait for something that is worth the battle.

Other departments/schools may ask for a re-test. Would you prefer that?

Hi everyone,
Lets close this thread.
UNE is a cool school, and you can learn a lot there.

Thanks for all the answers. I like to make sure I know all about a school before I make a decision to attend. It is a 4 year commitment. From the answers it looks like there are some issues going on at UNECOM. I would agree with catckrch that this is common to every university and not a major worry. UNECOM is still on my list and while obviously not the best DO school its certainly not the worst either. I may end up attending after all, I have a lot of research left before the final decision.

TweetyPie, you said there is a PSA honor society of the top 15% of the class. Is this calculated based on Pass/ Fail grades? Is there a class ranking?

Wook!!! How're you doin, long time no see. Wook, what happened to our MSII disc? When we started MSI the disc was very helpful, I probably HP'd at least 2 classes just because of that. If you have any system notes or disc could you send them to Peter (the class pres) to send out to everybody. Thanks, you sweet, sexy hunk.

DOLVR, All our classes are pass/fail but I have heard students say they do keep records of our number grades to use for comparing us when writing dean's letters. So I don't know for sure. I'd call the school. Since the whole point of the pass/fail grades is to improve the cooperation between students it seems pretty evil to turn around and use number grades without telling us, so I would guess they don't. Sorry I don't know more.

catskrch:

Hey thar!!

I know we did a disc for the MSI class when we were MSIIs, but I am not aware of anyone doing anything for the MSII class. Sorry. It IS a great idea though. I basically did noteservice and the old test for the second year. MeaCulpe is the MAN the MYTH the LEGEND for using noteservice. I have all my folders for all the systems courses (MSII classes). You are more than welcome to them.

When you get to your third year, you really don't use any of the notes from your first two years.

Wook

Off topic, but how do you like UNECOM? What's student life like there? Are there any opportunities for international healthcare experience at UNE?

When I interviewed at UNE, I was told that you can do international placements. Also the DO that interviewed me was going away on a mission soon. Also, if you want to do international placements/electives you would have to organize that yourself.

Overall I like the school itself very much. The surrounding area doesn't have much in the way of college culture like coffee shops or music stores- it's all residential. The one place off campus to get anything at is a gas station at the end of the road, any other store is a 10 to 15 minute drive away. And during the winter there's really only skiing. But the people are nice and we go to each other's homes a lot. There are also a lot of police around and they try to keep it a residential neighborhood and don't let the college students make much noise, which is good for studying. Campus security is also a very strong presence, which makes you feel safe; of course this IS Maine. But parking tickets are as common as snow flakes as a result. Since we do start in July you will have some summertime to enjoy.

I think the school really excels in board prep based on the way classes are taught. Our dean sent us an email of board results last month, in which we were below average on the COMLEX I in 10 of the last 15 years. But that's really surprising to me because I think UNECOM does an excellent job of teaching and everything is very practical and case based. Our anatomy program is one of the best in the country, I believe.

There is an international club of students that does go to foreign countries during breaks, so that would be fairly easy to do. They give presentations on their experiences when they get back.

Do you or anyone know what countries are available? Is it Europe mainly?
