I've forgotten the "U" at the beginning of UNECOM in my last post. Anyway, same question: does anyone have any info about the school?(University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine.)🙄

Hi! I know that they screen before sending a secondary. The screening is not very hard though... I think you have to an overall GPA of 3.0 and a total MCAT score of 20 with no less than an "M" on the writing sample.

I applied to UNECOM (just sent the secondary back a week or so ago)

Was the secondary on paper or was it electronic?

The secondary is electronic. You send it thru the computer, so you don't need to print it out on order to send.

Have you guys/gals visited UNECOM? I was up in Maine this summer and wasn't very impressed with the area. Coming from a city-environment, it's probably tough to get adjusted. At the same time, you're studying all day and night so what does it matter where you are!?

Any thoughts?

I've never visited but the picture on the brochure is beautiful!

Not that nice? How come? I would think it would be perfect..on the coast of Maine...you could go fishing, biking, hiking...
oh wait, REALITY CHECK...you could be studying, studying, studying (and looking out the window to beautiful landscape!)

I almost went to UNE for my PT degree but decided against it when I found out I was awarded scholarship at a more local institution. Before that UNE was my first choice. My primary care physician graduated from UNE and has nothing but wonderful things to say about the school (including the fact that he lived on the beach the entire time he was there). If you don't like small schools, rural areas, and cold water don't go. I'm happy I did my undergrad at a larger institution but I would imagine UNE to be ideal for a serious medical student (again as long as they can deal with the rural nature of the area). I guess it's a matter of preference and what you're used to but I personally found the campus to be beautiful.

UNECOM is actually not as rural as it is being made out to be. I did my undergrad in Maine and agree that is a most beautiful area. The southern coast of Maine is quite populated compared to the rest of Maine. Portland, which has everything one needs in a city is only a half hour away. But if you're coming from a big city I can see how it would feel quite isolated.

I come from a city environment, and although coastal Maine is beautiful and there are tons of outdoors activities, I couldn't adjust to the smallness of Biddeford and moved to Portland in the middle of my first year. Little things about Biddeford annoyed me, like how slow they are at the Subway when I go there for lunch, yet it's the ONLY Subway, so if I want a sandwich there isn't a different one to go to. If the 7-11 has all yucky slurpee flavors, there isn't another one. Seeing the same people everywhere, all the time. So I moved, and I like living in Portland.

As for not caring about the location of a school because you will be studying all the time - this is not true at all! Pick somewhere where there are things that you like to do nearby, because believe it or not, you WILL have free time sometimes, and when you do you'll be kicking your own ass for not caring more about the location. If you need a city environment to be happy, then by all means go to a school that's near one!
