Finished a masters program in biological related crap. Unemployed. Applied everywhere I could. Now working on my amcas. What do I do regarding unemployment? I am based in my parents' basement...

Volunteer activities, shadowing, etc?
What did you do with your time?
I dont think it's a good idea to go to manhattan to volunteer(and I did have some sucky experiences) when I cant even get a day job. In fact, I am sure anybody can get a "research volunteering" experience at any job. But somehow devoting any serious effort to any job is impossible at my age when I cant even buy a coffee.

I'm not sure I understand your post, but it doesn't answer the question "what did you do with your time"?

Try to learn a new language?
Work out? Train for a marathon?
Find some kids that needed help with school and tutor?
Learn gardening? Help with things at home?
Anything?

Just my opinion (and I'm premed too so not particularly qualified): I would mention doing whatever it is you did while applying for jobs.

Good luck! (I was unemployed for several months living in my brother's living room so I know it's tough. I tutored 2 kids in the same complex and studied some Spanish. Spent a lot of time jogging and in the gym too. And playing computer games...)

I can do things like working out. I think I could that just fine if I were employed. You know 2hrs of running per day is not very tough for me but any recreational activities beyond that I feel guilty about because I am unemployed! Sure if I had a job and a med school acceptance, i would quit my job and go to europe and work out(you know travel and all that stuff) and learn a new language. I dont think it's a good idea to spend your free time with a french textbook when you're such a loser who cant even get an entry-level job. Anyway I think tv commercial is over, so I get back to watching tv.

You absolutely should volunteer, or do something meaningful, if you don't currently have a job.

Being unemployed in and of itself doesn't look bad to med schools, but being unemployed and doing nothing does. When the time comes for your interviews, you want to be able to say something along the lines of "After getting my degree, I volunteered in a pediatric heme/onc unit and shadowed an ER physician while I was applying for positions. Once I was hired, I worked full-time and continued to do some volunteering and shadowing on weekends."

What you do not want to say is "After getting my degree, I applied for jobs, did not get one immediately, so I watched four seasons of House."

Sounds like a troll post.

Funny I was actually watching "House". I dont even like that tv show. Except for an occasional joke in that show that made me choke on a watermelon, it's mostly not funny.
I think I might try applying for a volunteer job now. I know thats one place where they cant reject me. But I remember my last experience volunteering at a hospital. I wa sin ER and I hardly ever saw any doctors. I was specifically told to speak with nurses, not doctors. And I felt I was an annoyance there.. Whats the point of volunteering there if you can't even shadow a doctor? Hell even shadowing a nurse is discouraged.

My post may sound "troll". But yours is definitely ******ed.
You might want to learn about the different parts of speech before calling my writing/posting "******ed."
And with your self-deprecating manner, you will have great difficulty find work anytime soon. You should work on your attitude and how you come across.

I don't care whether to call you a troll or a ******, ******. But stay away from me.

Because you are there to volunteer, not shadow?

Who would have thought!

The word "******" is very offensive to many people. I understand that it is often used colloquially, but it shouldn't be. Your posts on this thread have been rude and whiny. Stop complaining that you can't find a job, while you continue to sit on your as$ in your parents basement.

A lot of things may be offensive to people. Some people get offended by someone saying "god bless you." The context of how he said it to you is clear that he wasn't trying to demean anyone but you.

OP - Volunteer or come off as lazy. Your pick.

what's up buddy? Thought you were going to do dental school or Australia?

RE: unemployment, a lot of Americans are in the same boat so don't take it too personally.

I changed my mind. I would not succeed as a dentist. Also I've decided there is only 1 specialty of medicine that I want. It is anesthesiology. And if you are up to date with Australia forums, it is no longer a good option for medicine. Theoretically you could get to choose to go to usa or to stay in australia afterwards, but in reality you might end up unemployed. I will do my best to get into DO or MD.
I disagree that many people are unemployed. I feel like it's only me.

You do have that self-defeatist attitude so that's not surprising.

A few cousins of mine are unemployed. My mom's job got outsourced last month. A couple of my neighbors got fired recently.

It ain't just you, Charlie Brown.

... He didn't say it to me. However, I agree with the last part of your post.

Actually, as of May 2010, 9.3% of Americans were unemployed. This number is lower than what it should be because it does not count people who settled for temporary jobs, half-time jobs, or people who gave up searching. So more than 1/10 Americans are unemployed. That's over 30 million Americans and many have a family to feed and either no house or a house they're trying to pay off before they lose it. Sorry - it's not just you.

lol,
but sorry to hear about your unemployment
