Here's a different sort of financial aid question for any experts out there:

I'm a new third year med student, and I was required to move about four hours away from my school to start my rotations (our school has agreements with ~10 hospitals in the state). My wife voluntarily quit her job so she could move here with me. The job market here is dismal, especially for someone in her field (Scientific and Technical Communication / Marketing). There are practically no white collar jobs available.

Someone told her she should apply for unemployment because she was essentially forced to leave her job because of me. She already started applying for unemployment while continuing her job search, but I wondered if anyone has had any experience with a situation like this.

Do you think she'll be approved to collect unemployment? Btw, she worked at her previous job for about 9 months, and 8 months at the job before that. Both were salaried positions.

I'm no expert, but I have collected unemployment benefits before.

Every state is different, so go down to the unemployment office and read their pamphlets or talk to someone there about your particular situation before you go through the hassle of applying.

Just my opinion: I don't think they will approve her. She left her job voluntarily. You may feel that she was "forced" to quit in order to be with you...but the government does not make exceptions for romance. As I recall, if a person is fired or leaves the job voluntarily they do not qualify for unemployment compensation.

Best of luck to you both! :scared:
