This is the official list that was initially released. It includes several more pathology programs that were not on the prior list (as it was an updated later in the day). These programs are indicated in bold

The three numbers should be read as: spots available / filled / unfilled
example: Arkansas has 4 spots available, 3 filled in the match, 1 was unfilled and was available for the scramble

San Diego has 4 of 5 open spots? What a nice place to live, great climate. That's a good scramble.

It looks like Chicago programs are open too. Not a good climate, but you could do worse.

numbers are: quota/filled./unfilled

thank you. I am glad to know that all the programs that i have been interviewed are filled.

Neither Northwestern nor U of C filled??? And NW has 3 of 4 spots unfilled? Wow...

am i reading this correctly? UAB had to scramble 2 positions?

Seems like a pretty short list this year...

Assuming some of the programs with one spot listed are CP only or something... otherwise

Tried to clean it up a bit for people like me who had a hard time reading it, hope I didn't mess anything up.

BTW Path or Bust, I hope you came by this list some other way than not matching yourself. :luck:

Not many open positions. All of the places on my rank list filled, so I guess I can't use this to narrow down where I'm going.

Tried to clean it up a bit for people like me who had a hard time reading it, hope I didn't mess anything up.

Wow, good for scramblers.:)

Every year there are supprises, yet it's still hard to believe some of these programs get unfilled. Northwestern 3 out of 4, UC San Diego 4 out of 5? Must be some really tough luck.

Yeah I matched on Monday and will find out where on Thursday. I was helping two of my friends scramble into Surgery and I brought up the path list out of curiosity.

Thanks for fixing it, I was really busy earlier today. Both of my friends ended up scrambling into great programs 10 minutes in.

i'm pretty sure those 3 Northwestern positions are already spoken for somehow....they seem to have openings nearly every year at NW.

Can someone explain how to read the list because I can't tell how many positions are unfilled. It's surprising that U of C didn't fill. I was really impressed with the program when I interviewed.

Faculty members have been leaving NW for other jobs. Rao is the best teacher there and has been contemplating retirement for a while now. NW is in a period of transition now. Maybe that's why they had unfilled spots this year?

Phew. I'm glad Pathorbust! Thanks for sharing it.

This actually gives me a bit of hint where I'm going. Either:
1) I am the one person who matched Boston U.
2) I matched at 1 of the 2 places I ranked higher than BU.
3) BU hated me so much they didn't rank me and it means nothing. - Hoping this one is unlikely.

gschl1234, you read it like this:
U Alabama Med Ctr-Birmingham Pathology 1007300C0 3000131018 6 4 2 C Alexander P: 205-934-4303 [email protected]

The 6 4 2 means 6 spots, 4 filled, 2 unfilled.

Good luck all,
Sean

Thanks for explaining it.

I'm in the same boat since U of C was my 3rd choice so either I matched there or above.

Sean
My psychic power is telling me that you matched at 1 of the 2 places and that indeed caused one of the BU's unfilled spots.

For example,
Northwestern McGaw/NMH/VA-IL Pathology 2247300C0* 3001621094 4 1 3

As someone explained to me a couple of years ago, look at the last three numbers of the line above. This states that NMH had four positions, one filled, three are available via the scramble.
If I am incorrect, I hope that someone will correct me!
That being said, having interviewed at at NMH and knowing of their loss of multiple major teaching faculty (at least on the AP side of things)--including multiple stellar folks to UIC in the past couple years--as well as their utter lack of preview time (residents brushed this off stating 'you don't get anything out of previewing during your first couple years anyway so this isn't a big deal'), and faculty that I interviewed with stating that they don't have the time they'd like to have to teach during signout, etc etc etc, I had no small measure of misgiving regarding the current state of the program.

Sorry for the unnecessary post---multi-tasking here and didn't realize Sean had already addressed the confusion. Perhaps a deletion of my prior post is in order.
As others have said, I had been hoping that the list of scramble positions would help narrow down where I had matched. No such luck.....unless I am the person that matched at NWU.
PS---Really crossing my fingers for you, Sean, that you got either #1 or 2.

Path or Bust,
Can you post the unfilled list for FM here or just email it to me at [email protected]? I am already in residency and our program filled. I am curious to see which programs (our competition) did not fill.
Thanks!

Don't read too much into a program not filling. It happens every year, people say, "wow, I'm surprised program X didn't fill!" blah blah. It happens. There is a lot of randomness in the match. Sometimes it is for a certain reason (not interviewing enough people, an evil attending interviewing people and scaring them off) but sometimes it isn't. Speculation doesn't really help.

Speculation doesn't really help.

Agreed. However, as yaah and others have repeatedly stated, the opportunity to preview and the time to actually be taught during signout, are crucial points when evaluating programs. Perhaps I wasn't the only one to be concerned about this when assessing various programs.

AS far as I could tell, NWern has a double-plus-ungood reputation. I love Chicago but was strongly advised not to apply there (as well as UC) by several faculty members.

Ditto. Thanks, gb, for backing my 'speculation'.

as i've said in the past, i don't take too much stock in a single year's results, but if a program failed to fill multiple years in a row that'd make me concerned. some of last year's big "surprises" like U Wash and Penn appear to have filled this year.

i was a bit disappointed to see my home program go unfilled. hopefully they got someone good in the scramble.

Very true - as much as programs try to minimize the importance of these things or exaggerate their program's strengths in these areas, applicants have to somehow figure it out. There are likely programs that give you an hour with a bunch of slides and call it "preview time."

Well I found out I matched and I have UCSD #1. I'm not sure what to think. I'm either the only one that matched into the program, or they didn't rank me at all. If I did match there.....I am kinda worried cuz, well, how come I'm the only one that wants to go there? If I didn't......well, hey, why did you pass me up? Oh it sux to be a pessimist!

My two cents... I applied and was declined an interview. They said that they had "SO MANY" great applicants that they could not accomodate all and I was not in the cut (which they decided to inform me very late in the season).

I certainly do not wish to sound arrogant and while I cannot expect EVERY program to view my application favorably, I was preplexed that the Top 5-10 programs (BWH, JHU, MGH, UCSF, UW, WashU etc) were gracious enough to invite me for interviews, during and after which I received positive responses, that UCSD couldn't see me fit for a visit.

I believe it is their over confidence and plain arrogance in how they treated some applicants that is now biting them in the backside.

I actually think the Program is good, just some of the staff etc could have better PR/customer service skills.

I know they did!! One of my star buddies, who prolly could have gone anywhere ranked Tampa first and matched (of course).
