Hi,

I had a question. I know med schools don't like you leaving your grad. program unfinished to come to med school. Is it the same case for dental schools. I am thinking about starting a public health program on my year off before starting dental school but if i get into i'll leave the public health program and go to dental school. I might consider going back and finishing the public health degree.

I think entering a program only to leave it would be a huge waste of time. Further, I don't think any dental schools will accept you if you tell them you are NOT going to get the advanced degree.

They'll wonder WHY you are in a public health program if you aren't going to get the degree.

I woudn't do this under any circumstances. Put yourself in the postition of the adcoms, and I think you'll get the feeling that such an applicant would appear shady.

I think you could bail on the grad degree program to get into dschool only if your numbers are good aka have a strong application w/o the degree...have some people finished the degree in 1 year before? It would be better if so...even if you don't plan to do the same...

Abina:

You're fine. Go ahead and start the grad program. I have a good friend that got accepted to dental school and never finished the Masters Program. The dental school won't check up on it either. In your interview, just say that you have the desire to finish it up sometime in the future...

I personally defended my thesis before I enrolled in dental school. But, I would have definitely quit in the middle to attend dental school. I hate research...

Becareful,

I apply after the first year of my master program and I didn't get 1 acceptance.
I apply again the following year with a MS degree, the same GPA/DAT score, rec. letter, application letter, and only 2 additional units and I get a handfull of acceptances to the same set of schools.

Is your call & good luck!

Alex
