Hi

I am all set to graduate residency in 5 days, and was supposed to start work mid july. But I ended up tearing my hip labrum due to femoral acetabular impingement 3 weeks ago. I can walk (like a grandpa), but climbing stairs pivoting etc.. is a chore. Running out of the question.

I am thinking about getting it fixed surgically, but it would mean that I am out for 3 months without a source of income, since my job is in Texas and my surgery and rehab would be in midwest.

Do I have any option. Does my disability insurance from residency be of any benefits after residency? I have not bought any DI on my own unfortunately. (fortunately I have private health insurance).

Is unemplyoment a possible option? I would hate to do it, but I am kind of in a bind here.

Call your disability insurer and ask if they will allow you to continue with their policy. They might. Pay the premium. Get the surgery. Fill out the short term disability forms. Collect a check. Call your future employer and let them know about the expected delay.
