Unfulfilled pre-req. Problem?

This may be very simple, but I feel I should ask anyways.
I am currently in the application cycle, but have not taken a college English class. I recognize that many med schools require that you have taken an English class.. but does it simply need to be done before you actually enter the med school, or does it have to be done before you are accepted by that school.
