Unfunded Predoctoral Internship

Hey, Everybody,

I am going through the clearinghouse right now and am finding it incredibly overwhelming. Anyway, one of my fellow students told me that he has heard of some students actually calling internship directors and offering their services for free -- just so they can get an internship and not have to stay an extra year. Has anyone on here heard of this happening? If so, how did they do this?

My friend did it on Friday when she found out she hadn't matched. She got a volunteer full-time position at a very good site. To be honest I have mixed feelings about this.....

oy. do people EVER want to start getting out of debt! I cannot imagine doing this ever.

What annoys me is that as a result the rest of us have difficulty negotiating decent salaries and benefits. I don't about the US but apparently few Canadian intership sites offers health benefits to their interns...

An unpaid year for internship would be very unpleasant. You would resent it.

Unfortunately, some universities do not fund additional time in graduate school. You'd still be without funding for a year.
