A committed core of people at my ambulance company has begun talking about trying to unionize. It's no secret that management is hostile to the idea, but it seems like a large majority of our crew chiefs and EMT-P's would go for it.
Briefly, we're a non-profit ambulance service that serves an urban area of aproximately 50,000 people near a major city and runs about 10,000 calls per year (75% emergency, 25% transfers). About 20 full-time employees and 40 or so part-timers and casual employees.
I'm curious to hear from any folks who have worked for both union and non-union EMS companies, and especially anyone who's been through a transition between the two. Is it worth the flak that's almost certain to come?
