I would usually take a unique story to involve one of these two things:

1) overcoming significant obstacles (health, family, financial, etc.) during your path to medical school

2) noteworthy, high-level achievements in fields outside of medicine (military, peace corps, athletics, etc.) prior to applying

Hello guys,

What do people mean on here when they say they have a unique story? What is considered to be a unique story?

It's more about what brought you here applying to medical school; everyone applying has reached the conclusion that they want to pursue medicine, so the true story they have is their rationale for choosing medicine.

Doesn't any military service count as "unique story"? My understanding was that one didn't need to be a Special Forces veteran or to have seen combat; having been a Navy cook was sufficient to provide a strong boost to one's app.

I think any military experience would count as very unique and reflect positively on an applicant, yes. The “high-level” statement referred more to sports or skills

Agreed; I would be very surprised indeed if only certain types of military experience were looked on very favorably!
