So I'm applying to Univ. of Michigan, and I got an email from the Associate Dean asking me to send in a course description and syllabus for the Statistics 13 course I took at UCLA. Unfortunately, this class doesn't seem to be the equivalent of the 300 course Univ. of Michigan requires. Did anyone else run into this issue? And does anyone know of a course in the Southern California area that I can take to satisfy this prereq? Is it even worth it for me to apply anymore if my chances of completing this course are slim? 😕

hi!
i'm applying to UMich as well (dream school!!!), and i have the same problem...pretty much what i'm planning to do is take a course at a university nearby...it's a social science statistics course...my advice is to look at finding a social science class at your school...and apply! good luck!

THis is the reason why I will not apply to this school.

You can email a list of stats courses with course descriptions that your school offers to the head (I think she's the head - not sure though) of their stats department, Brenda Gunderson [email protected] She told me which course to take.

I got to the University at BUffalo and the only way to fulfill that requirement is to take a graduate stats course. That one is offered in the spring so I have to take the pre-requisite in the fall (currently). Unfortunately that course is for graduate biostatisics majors (masters students and phds) and it is way over my head (I am withdrawing from that course).

I received the same notification and stating it should have a lab portion.

I'm sending in my syllabus, but there are no other statistics courses with quite the stringent requirements offered at my college.

To date, entering students have been able to fulfill this requirement in their first semester. Many students have done this and you may want to look into whether or not this option is still available. If that doesn't work out, and the pre-req must be satisfied prior to matriculation, perhaps you should check whether or not you can take an equivalent course in the Winter or Summer semester.

They changed it this year so that stats is a pre-requsite and must be taken prior to matriculation. PharmCAS mentions that it must be taken by the end of spring 2010 - so we cannot take it during the summer

for those of us who do not go to Michigan - it is hard finding an equivalent course

I could have sworn it was a pre-req last year as well. But maybe I'm imaging things.

OP: do you have a Cal State university near you ? I don't think you can possibly take it this semester at Cal State as semester started esentially a month ago, but maybe see if you can apply for the spring ? My statistics course that I took at Cal State satisfied statistics requirements for all schools that had that pre-req requirement.

I got the same message from the dean as well!
I'm still in the process of searching nearby schools that might have an equivalent that they accept...

Yeah...I tried looking for courses at local community colleges and California State universities, but I can't seem to find any. I emailed one of the stats professors at UCLA to see if he could suggest a course, and he gave me a long list that just isn't feasible for me to finish by Spring.

Is it even worth it for me to complete the supp app? I'm thinkin' about not doing it, cuz I don't think it's worth another couple hundred bux to sign up for a class and spend the 50 bux on the supp app - all to apply to a school I don't even know if I'll get in. This is so frustrating.

I'm in the same situation. I cannot find a statistic course with a lab portion. The only one available is a 5XXX level at the university but I would have to have taken 3-4 of their preqs math courses first. Oh my, is statistic (with a lab) that important in pharm school? My pharmacists think I'm crazy when I mention the preq I have to take cause they didn't have it then.......

I got the same email! Lucky for me though, my stat 200 at Penn State seems to meet all their expectations (phew!). Good luck to the rest of you!

Guys, by 'lab' they mean that the class teaches and uses statistics software like SPSS or SAS. If your undergraduate courses are not teaching that, I seriously doubt the level of academic rigor at your university. It shouldn't be hard to find.

The intro course (100 level) at mine used minitab. There was also psych stats (200 level) but i did not take that since I am not a psychology major. Then there is medical statistics (400/500 level but I cannot take this year since it is at the same time s graduate cell bio). Other than those 3 courses (only 2 of which are in the biostatistics department) there are no other undergraduate courses.

And about the level of my university - I go to the university at buffalo.I do not know what yu think of it, but there are a ton of people who are trying to get into their pharmacy school. They require intro undergrad stats but higher level stats are covered when you are actually a pharmacy student. I have also checked a few other colleges around here and they also do not have a large assortment of stats courses. At UB, the people who take higher level stats courses are biostats majors.

Oh wow, that stats prerequisite seems to be a pain in the butt for all of you. I think they were much more lax with it several years ago in terms of what they would accept for credit. It wasn't required, but I passed out of it my P1 year, giving me a lot of time to do absolutely nothing. Sucks for ya'll.

Question for all of you guys, does University of Michigan accept community college credits because I cannot find the credit agreement ANYWHERE!

They should, but there are some courses that a community college won't offer that are on the prerequisite list.

Yes, but you CANNOT take the stats credit at CC. It MUST be taken at a 4 year university.

I have the same problem. i got an email from V. Perry and my stats class doesn't qualify... has anyone asked him yet if UMich will let you take it in the spring/summer if you get accepted? i plan to soon...

apparently, not having the class doesn't affect granting you an interview, as i'm flying out there this thursday. i just hope it doesn't weigh too heavily against you, until you can find an appropriate course =(

seriously, what a bad way to weed people out by requiring a course that's so hard to find. especially if you've been long out of the 4-year university school system like me, sometimes cc is the only option.

i'm in a similar position as you...i graduated in 2008 and my stats course is not equivalent...i think you can get conditional acceptance if you plan to take the course soon...i found it at a state university near me...congrats on your interview...do you mind posting your stats?

I asked and she said that the course should be approved first by sending in the course syllabus. I asked about if the course could be taken by the summer end of July and she said yes but they would have to get everything in, including grades by the end of the July. So if the course ended late July then they would have to get the grades by the end of July but teachers have to grade exams and process everything in.

really it's not that hard of a course to find. it's just a basic upper level stats class that uses SPSS or Minitab

You really don't have a 200 or 300 level stats course? I'm at one of the smallest colleges in my state and we offer it twice a year

UB does not offer a 300 level stats course. The 200 level one is psych stats (for psychology majors). Someone looked at the course descriptions and told me a couple graduate courses that would fulfill the requirement (unfortunately one was way above my head. too many proofs)

I also took psych stats at UB, and I applied to Michigan last year. I was accepted at UM, and that course was accepted as a Stats course. Unless something has changed since last year, you should be ok.

They've removed stats as a first year course so you have to have it done in your pre-reqs

I added it as a possible s=course but she didn't approve it. Maybe when you applied you only needed a general stats course because you would have stats 350 during your first year and since 350 is a pre-req now, you need a higher level stats course or something.
