I remember hearing something about how you have to do your intern year at Hennepin County, which makes for a really ****ty first year -- and that the quality of the program doesn't justify having to endure that PGY1.

yeah, PGY1 year is a rotating internship at HCMC. If you don't mind averaging Q4 call then you'll be fine. It is, however, a great learning experience.

Can you elaborate on the TY year there? Aside from Q4 call, how is everything esle? Malignant attendings? Adequate support when you don't know what the crap is going on? Perks? Spill the beans...

HCMC is the hospital of last resort for the cities of Minneapolis and St Paul (and a level 1 trauma and burn center). The upside is that like in any county hospital, you will see pathology that won't walk through the door at a posh suburban community hospital. The downside is that the place is not exactly known for outstanding support services.

I interviewed there last year. I really liked the undergrad university feel of the place. They are really busy, compared to other programs. I know they started some new thing where you'd work night shift for part of each month, in place of being on call Q whatever. They were so busy it sounded like people's brains were melted by the end of the non-stop on-call shift. So that's good.

One thing worried me though. They had a lower % 1st time oral boards passing rate compared to other programs I interviewed at.

I'm currently a transitional intern at HCMC who's linked to the U of MN radiology residency. I would say that the year is challenging, but really good. This year we do 12 rotations (we switch every 31 days instead of every 4 weeks) and have 7 rotations that are q4. The radiology transitionals call months are: 2 months of medicine (either cards, general or MICU), 2 months of surgery, Psych, OB, peds. Then we have a month of neurology, 2 months of ED and 2 months of radiology.

Overall everyone at the hospital is awesome. It's a really laid back atmosphere, where everyone seems to have a good time, and almost everyone gets along. All of the attendings are really into teaching and every service LOVES having transitional interns on their service, because we have a great reputation in the hospital.

I was really nervous to start my transitional year here, and even though i wish i was on call less, it's a really good year and i've learned a lot while having a really good time.

I would say if you're really interested in the U of MN's radiology program don't let HCMC's intern year scare you away. It's a really good bonding opportunity for the whole intern class, and it's been a pretty fun year so far. Feel free to PM me if anyone has any questions.
