Hi There,
I am a non-trad, student who wants to change careers. Have not taken any pre-reqs yet(saving money and looking into private loans to start). I see that Univ. of Southern Cali has a DH/DDS 6 year program. Does anyone have any info/experience with this program? I currently have a BA and a MFA in another field. This program appealed to me because it think the DH class will be a good intro and prepare me for the the DDS program and also allow me to take the pre-reqs and help improve my science GPA. Here is the thing, I called and spoke to a guy and he says that he "Thinks" I would NOT qualify for this program because I already have a Masters degree. I am unsure why that would matter and he could not give me a straight explanation. I sort of have the feeling that he's not involved in the selection process. Why would a Master in a another filed that I earned in 09 hurt my changes of getting accepted?

Does anyone have any input and or advice about applying to this school/program?

I like that its a dule program and the only I can find that will allow transfers and 2nd degree seeking students to apply. All other dual BS/DDS programs are for high school Sr's. only.

Any advice?

just take the pre req at any 4 year universities and try to get high grades as possible. USC DH/DDS is not worth it financially why? you will pay around 600k at least (400k for DS tuition and 100K (50k/year for tuition) mind you this number does not cover LA living cost and food. add interest and living cost that number can easily go up to 800k before you graduate.

Agreed. Probably going to drown in debt and max out your loans should you go this route. Public schools are the best bet for the prereqs UNLESS you're rich.

is this guaranteed from hygiene to dds?

He does not need to give you an explanation since it is a question about the design of the program and your background may not fit neatly with their target applicants.

There are no guarantees (other than death/taxes).

In my opinion, I don't think the program is worth it due to the high tuition. My suggestion would be to take your pre-reqs at a 4 year university as well. Focus on making good grades there, get more exposure through shadowing, etc. I had friends that got a 4 year degree in a different major, went back to school for 2 years for additional pre-reqs and doing just fine in dental school now.

Close, the only guarantee is death. Homeless people, tribes in jungles, and aliens don't pay taxes.

Well, since you insist on using a microscope to differentiate the nuances, "aliens" and "homeless people" may not pay any income tax, FICA or Medicare, but even they are not exempt from other taxes-sales, liquor, cigarette, and other of the 97 direct and "indirect taxes" listed-. The "tribes in the jungle" may have their own "offering" to their chief/gods. If it makes you feel better.......

I meant extraterrestrial aliens as a joke, but that went a little over your stern head. *Pulling my microscope back out* I'm certain "offerings" and taxes are not synonymous. You don't need a reference for that, do you?

Since you have such intimate knowledge what ETs are paying in taxes, we will just modify the old adage of "death and taxes" to exclude other earthly "aliens".
