hey everyone,
i heard through the grapevines that the PD for the Univ of Toledo pain fellowship (Dr. Atallah) has resigned from his position as PD and the program is still searching for a replacement. He was a large reason for why this fellowship was as strong and interventional as it was. i know many people (including myself), who ranked this program high, solely because of his involvement in the program. to my knowledge, applicants werent made aware of this decision (though in-house applicants and maybe people tied to the area may have been aware?). this creates an unfair situation where people who were potentially aware of the decision may have not ranked or ranked the program lower, and those who weren't aware may have ranked them higher, thus increasing their chances of matching in an unstable program. Furthermore, most people who certified their rank lists were under the impression that Dr. Atallah was going to be PD, but that is currently not the case. what makes it even more frustrating was that this resignation was done so close to match day. i personally would have ranked this program lower had I known.

with rank lists already submitted, is there anyway to have this program removed from someones rank lists? if we were to contact the nrmp about this situation, would they be able to help us? what happens if someone matches at this program, but there is no PD/stability? anyone have any experience with a situation like this? thanks for your time

Is this confirmed?

I think they interviewed an awfully high number of people for the two spots they had open.

Is Atallah staying on as faculty? I specifically asked the chairman when I interviewed there about there being only one faculty member and he said thy were planning on bringing on someone by the time the current match pool start.

One of the currrent fellows will probably end up staying there, im guessing. His wife is a fellow and he's keen in staying.

I liked Dr. Atallah, and he is a workhorse but it always struck me that if he had to take time off for medical issues or something like this happened, the program would virtually grind to a halt.

There is a lot of flux in that hospital system, being taken over and moving to a new facility for most of the general hospital stuff although pain was staying in the same place.

They also had a *very* high number of patients with intrathecal pumps‍♂️

I wonder who certified their ROL list.....

They just sent out this email

“Dear Fellowship Candidate:

Recently and quite unexpectedly a major change in the nature and personnel of our pain medicine fellowship occurred. After much deliberation with the leadership of our fellowship, the core program, and the institution we came to the difficult decision that we would not accept any candidates into fellowship positions at the present time. This decision was not reached lightly, but was made out of concern for any potential fellows. It was felt that it would be unfair to accept anyone into the program until a time when the situation could be resolved and the future learning environment insured. We thank you for your interest in our program, and apologize whole-heartedly for any burden that these circumstances have placed on you. Once again, we are sorry. Hopefully, in the near future we will once again be in a position to accept applications. Good luck with the fellowship match, and we wish you well in your future endeavors.”

I guess the interview was just a huge waste of money for the candidates.
