Hey do you guys know much about UVMC. I heard it is tailored at training physicians to preactice in small towns and rurally. Any have any insight?

Yea, its in a small town and rural, so the medical education is geared towards populations from similar area. I've had friends who interviewed there and told me its too cold there. They're from California, go figure. They also told me it is very ethnically homogenous there.....

UVM does not get many VT applicants so most of their class is out of state. So there may be a push for people to stay and practice in VT, which is mostly rural. THe school itself is in Burlington, which is not rural. While you can get to the countryside in 10 minutes from there, Burlington itself is a very small but hip city, and by city I'm stretching the word but that's what people there refer to it as.

Their application does ask you to list the places you've lived in and the populations, probably to see your likelihood of staying in a rural place to practice.

I also went there for undergrad. It is definitely hippie land. After graduating and moving on to a consulting firm where business dress was the norm, I couldn't believe how hippie-esque it was and how I hadn't realized that while there as an undergrad.

The area is great if you're into the outdoors-- skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, rollerblading, biking, horseback riding-- or if into pot. Every April 20th, they used to have a big smokefest on the library steps and certain dorms would cook big batches of rise krispie treats. The last year I was there they abolished it but it was a funny site to see.

Also the "city" is small but maintains a unique individuality where there are probably as many independently owned restaurants and boutiques as there are big chain stores.

The sunset from the castle across from the Ethan Allen movie theatre is amazing. You get a 180 degree view of the lake. I've traveled to 15 countries and seen sunsets all over the world and can honestly say that sunsets over Lake Champlain are some of the best ever.

That's my $.02 on Burlington.

UVM is a great medical school. I have written many posts on UVM, so if you search for my posts with the keywords UVM then you will find some more threads on the matter.

I am currently a first year at UVM, so feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I wouldn't say that you absolutely need to be going into rural med or primary care if you go here. At this time, I am not interested in doing primary care, and I mentioned nothing about a desire to enter PC in my interview. You also have the opportunity to do rotations at Maine Medical Center in Portland, which is an excellent hospital. I am interested in emergency medicine, and Maine Med has an excellent EM residency program. Another nice thing is that you have a lot of flexibility to do external rotations because you take step 1 of boards in Feb of your second year, and then you start rotations, so you are 6 months ahead of schools in the rest of the country. Let me know if you have other questions - I absolutely love it here, so I might be fairly biased...
