Does anyone have any thoughts on the surgery program at UVA? I matched into ophtho there and to make a long story short, I have to do my prelim at UVA and I'm stuck between prelim med and surgery. I'd rather do surgery, but I don't know anything about the program because they don't do interviews for the designated prelims. I know pretty much nothing about so any info would help!

I interviewed there for GS last year, and it had probably the nicest group of faculty and residents I met on the interview trail. I also got the feeling they worked 80 hrs a week. I personally think you'd be crazy to do a surgery prelim for optho, but if you were going to do it, UVA would be a good place.

Take the Medicine prelim. I think they get their 80 hours from their residents at UVa Surgery. However, it is known to be excellent training.

Take medicine... GS programs eat prelims like you for lunch from what I've seen and it ain't pretty

I'm very biased but Gen Surg at UVa is awesome. Great faculty and great program with a very strong program director and chair. You will be quite pleased with this program.

I'd do the surgury prelim but of course Im a surgical resident so my opinion is kinda biased. The UVA program is great with strong training, you'll learn a ton. That said, I've felt the impact of lazy prelims at my program, so if you can't hack it do everyone a favor and stay away.

Thank you all for the input, UVA sounds like a great program. I have had several people surprised I wanted to do a surgery prelim. But, I actually really liked my surgery rotation and not so much with medicine. So I would much rather work 80 hours of surgery than 70 hours of medicine. And I definitely won't be lazy.
