Univ of Washington Interviews for 2006

Ok, so I lived in WA for 13 years - was pretty much raised there - but because of a move in the middle of my Soph. year of high school I'm (obviously) not a WA resident anymore.

HOWEVER, I did mention Yakima, WA (W00t. Palm Springs of Washington, kiddies! We're talking APPLE country!) on my application (at least a few times) . . . does anyone have ANY idea if this might have a positive effect on making the "almost impossible" only "pretty darn unlikely" or if there is any other way I can show them that I am personally invested in the state (not to mention that my parents paid taxes there for 13 years. . . )?

To be completely honest, I'd go to UWSOM over UCSF, Harvard, or pretty much any other top 10. I wish there were some way to relay that without sounding needy.

Sorry for whining - I'm just super-jealous of all you Washingtonians right now!

Just curius... why would you pick UWSOM over UCSF or Harvard? Because you love Seattle so much? Or because of certain aspects of the school?

Just wanted to chime in as a 2nd year UW student - please have a great answer for this question. The admissions committee wants people who really want to be here.

anyone interviewed at UW last month? I heard that tomorrow is the 2nd Executive Meeting, right?

I highly doubt that mentioning Yakima will have any bearing on your application. I WORKED at the UDub in the dept of medicine for 3 years, and now that I'm out-of-state, they have yet to even offer me a secondary, let alone an interview. Dropping the name of a city in Washington isn't going to do much good.

And I doubt your parents paid taxes in Washington, seeing as there is no state income tax. Unless you meant property taxes or perhaps auto taxes. I don't know how that works, exactly, as I rented and did not own. But it was nice to not have that extra cut taken from my paycheck every 2 weeks!

Yeah, I interviewed on tuesday, so it looks like I will be amongst those reviewed tomorrow. So, unless they REALLY didn't like me, I will be expecting a competitive applicant pool e-mail on monday. Did anyone else get a huge grill of an interview for UW? I did ... 🙁

I have concluded that i do not want to have anything to do with this school anymore. They are the only one yet to send me a secondary. They have been soooooooooo annoyingly picky about out of state students. Right now, i will pick a "picture-perfect" in and out cheeseburger over that school.

Well, if there's anything you are craving from Seattle, and it can fit in my carry-on, I'll be happy to bring it with me in a couple weeks.
Although, teriyaki might not make it all the way (I would probably eat it on the plane) and I can't bottle the smell of a Sunday morning on Alki or Ave. urine... 😀

🙁 🙁 🙁
I lived in an apartment facing the beach on Alki for 2 years. I miss it so much. There's nothing like waking up in the morning to the Sound with the Olympics behind it, and ferries and cruise ships going by, and then jogging or rollerblading down Alki Ave to take in the Seattle skyline.

Except maybe watching the sunset over the mountains....🙁

Thank you for making me homesick 🙁

Please send me a jar of Mt. Rainier Fireweed honey from Pike Place (the snoqualmie valley honey farm stuff), a pound of smoked salmon, some spicy crunchy tuna rolls and a blue hawaiian from Ohana on 1st ave, and, if possible, bottle the sunset over Alki, the smell of Mount Rainier's forests, and the music from a random night at Sunset Tavern in Ballard, and please ship overnight postage to me.
I have a voucher for a day at Mount Baker that I probably won't use this year. I'll send it to you, and we'll call it even.
Thanks.

KeitaiKT, I did too.

I'm so nervous about tomorow's meeting. Are you?

Ugh, totally! I'm glad I'm not the only one who was grilled - I guess misery loves company. The worst was, I had an afternoon interview, and all the people I talked to who had morning interviews said how comfortable, friendly, and conversational their interviews were. So I completely let down my gaurd, only to go in to a rapidfire oral examination on the state of the American health care system!

Very nervous about how tomorrow's meeting will pan out. After my interview, the competitive applicant pool is the best result I could hope for. :meanie:

Keitaik- I am curious about your interview. I interviewed in earlyish October, so my application was reviewed at the first ADCOM mtg (sigh, the competitive pool...), but I had a very laid-back interview experience. Who interviewed you? Most people i have talked to had pretty laid-back experiences. But, both of the med. students at our lunch said they were grilled hard-core at their UW interview (one of the girls said she broke down and cried), so I am thinking that maybe a hard interview is better (could show that they are more interested in you and want to see how you handle hard situations??). 😕

I was kinda hoping for an interview that was harder, so I could separate myself a little better. 😳

Who knows, it probably just depends on the individual interviewer...

Hey guys, I have an interview on monday, in the morning (thank god, I think I would die with all the pressure). This is my 3rd interview, and my first "stress-interview," or so it seems from all the interview feedback. My first one was at WashU and it was the most laid back, conversational meeting EVER! So then I kind of got comfortable with that and then at my interview at Mizzou, it was SO much harder, even though it probably wasn't, by normal standards. I am UBER nervous for this UW interview. I haven't gotten any other interviews, and the ones I have gotten are all at schools where I have a special connection, whether in-state, or as an employee. So I almost feel like this is my last shot at a school.

What if I break down and cry? Those who were grilled, did you post a feedback? What was your most difficult question? And do they really peer out at you over those laptops?! I am SO intimidated already!

well, try to stay calm even if you really want to cry. But I haven't heard anyone cries during interview at UW. It depend who interviewed you, my interviewers didn't turn on the lab tops, they just interview face to face with me.

DID PEOPLE WHO INTERVIEWED LAST MONTH HEAR ANYTHING FROM UW YET?

The Executive Committee meets today. For those who had been in this shoe, usually how long after the meeting you receive an email of putting on competitive pool? Is this on the same day or next day? When did your status page update from "your application is complete" to "Decision already made"

THANKS IF ANYONE COULD HELP.

My status page still reads "your application is complete" - nothing about a decision has been made. But I got the ol' competitive pool e-mail the Wednesday or Thursday following the last ADCOM Mtg (which was also on a friday).

I was also grilled... but not to the point that I would have cried or anything. It was more like I felt I was being quized... lots of rapid fire questioning. This interview was very very different from the many interviews I have had since then. My 3 interviewers were not trying to "know me as a person" ..they were trying to decide how I answer -on the spot- to political, ethical, and current event questions. And a few questions about my research as well.

It wasn't horrible or traumatizing... it just doesn't seem like the most effective way to way to weed through their large applicant pool.?? that's just my opinion.

Although my interview was definitely a "grill", it was not traumatic or anything. I can be very emotional, and I did not even come close to crying 😀 So don't worry about it - they are not mean, they just ask a LOT of questions. My interviewers took turn asking a lot of health care related things, and I agree with Seattlepostbacc that I didn't think they were a great way to get to know me - nothing like any of my other interviews!

Good luck to all of us - hopefully we'll get out of that competitive applicant pool by April! Of course, I am not in that pool yet - here's to hoping I make it that far.

Hey everyone. I interviewed this week at UWSOM. It wasnt like what most of you guys are reporting. My experience was very laid back and conversational. I got the feeling that they wanted to know who I was, and if I could fit into the mold of a great team working environment. EXCOM meeting Yesterday!!! Hope everything goes well for me and everyone who interviewed!

👍

Anyone know of anybody being accepted to UWSOM this early? I know lots who have interviewed and haven't heard of anyone being accepted yet...

Yeah, I had to leave the financial aide talk early to go to my interview. Which one were you? 😀

I was the guy who met another applicant who was from the same town as me and we worked together a long time ago but didnt realize it. Plus I talked to you and another guy after my interview and your tour of health sciences. 🙂 (Does this ring a bell?) So we find out Monday about our status! I hope we get some good news, maybe perhaps even news that we are classmates together! 👍

Hey, I'm interviewing tomorrow morning. Anyone else going to be there? Can any seattle natives recommend a good coffee shop to sit and review some stuff before the interview tomorrow. i'm driving up there now and I will be staying at University inn.

Oh I hope I get one of those "conversational" interviews that allegedly exists!

Hey, Good Luck with your interview tomorrow!! I don't have mine for a couple weeks...
Anyways, I like to hang out at this cafe called Cafe Solstice. It's at the bottom of the "Ave"(University Way). It's real chill in there and they often have good music. I used to study there all the time. OR, if you want to be closer to your interview location, you could always hang out at the Rotunda at the Health Sciences center. That's where all the med, dent, pharm, and research people eat. If you ask someone at the med center, I'm sure they can direct you there.
Good luck!

I did and that is so funny because I too say I even miss the rain. I even miss the hundreds of teryaki joints and smell of homeless urine on the Ave. The weekends are the worst because I want to head down to Alki or eat at a hole in the wall in the International District. I've already been looking at Harborview residencies. Too crazy. I love my class and have a great school as far as facilities, professors, and support. I'm even class president for Hell's sake -- but there's just something about Seattle that weaseled it's way into my blood. If I could have UofU SOM, cleanliness and friendliness of Salt Lake, and the really cool electric light rail of Salt Lake situated in Seattle I'd be in heaven. Call me Marie Antoinette!!!

Where's your love for Ballard?? I love my scandinavian neighbors of Ballard!

ACCORDING TO MY CALCULATION, up till Nov 18, UWSOM has interviewed total 420 applicants. i wonder if this mean that they will more likely to recheck the competitive pool and give out some acceptances, or even send out more acceptances this time than after the first meeting? WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?

I'm not really sure what you mean, why they would be more likely to recheck the competitive pool now. But, I did hear that UW tries to fill the class asap, so those interviewing earlier have an advantage. Dunno how true that is. my dad told me that he heard it from his colleagues.

Well, after the first Executive meeting (Oct 30??), most of the interviewees were put into the "competitive pool" because it was so early in the process to give out a lot of acceptances. However, up to this second committee meeting (Nov 18), they had interviewed more than half of the applicants, so I wonder if they will send out more acceptances than the last one. Like you said they want to fill their class ASAP, then they probably accept some from competitive pool, that's what I think. What do you think?

My advisor said interviewing earlier at the UW is not better. He said, he believes they are actually more likely to accept those who interview a little later (Decemberish), b/c by then they have an idea on what the "applicant pool" for the year is. I don't know if I buy this or not (or where his info comes from)... but he is the pre-med advisor and he generally gives good advice.

As to the person asking about a cafe - there are a ton of cafe's on the Ave (University Way) and most are pretty good. I personally love Starbucks (best coffee and the cheapest) and there is one close to campus (a little walk from the med. center though). I also like "Cafe on the Ave" which is right across the street from Starbucks - they have a good atmosphere.

Hi all! I am here at Trabant Chai Lounge, right by the Neptune Theatre on NE 45th. I'm waiting for my boyfriend to call so we can do some mock interviewing. I LOVE SEATTLE!! (but I already knew that) The crisp cool air makes me so happy!

Yes, when I said interviewing early, I meant earlier than christmas, at least that's what my father's colleague said. i didn't know they had already had an october excom meeting, a lot of schools meet for the first time in november. So that is great, I bet a lot of people off of the competitive pool will get acceptances!

Good luck to all!

Also, I think I might cut it close for the 1030 tour tomorrow. my interview is at 9:40, the 3rd of my interviewing committee, so who knows how far behind schedule they might be. the afternoon tour isn't until 3:30. is the tour worth waiting around for? I really want to go to UW and I doubt the tour will change my mind. this summer I stopped by the campus and snooped around to see the 1st year lecture hall.

Mmm. Trabant Chai Lounge = good. In my honest opinion the tour isnt worth going to, but I may have a biased opinion since I am already a student here (not med), you'll probably have other chances to tour when you are accepted here! 🙂

Yeah, hopefully monday we'll both hear something good from UW - and hopefully we'll both be suffering through anatomy boot camp together next fall ;-)

I'm not sure how true this is. I spoke with an admissions person two years ago and she explained that (for the UWSOM anyway) it didn't matter if applicants submit their secondary materials early or right on the January dealine. Looking at past years, she told me this means that people interviewing in Jan and Feb have equal shots as we, the early interviewees, do. Oh well.

Also: for you who just interviewed, don't expect to get an email today (Monday) about your status. It took 5 days for them to email me about being placed in the pool.

Not really, I've just received an email today about being placed in the pool. i'm so disappointed. Anyone in the same boat?

I'm in the pool too. Interviewed on 10/18th.

I do not quite understand about this pool thing, does it mean that our files will be reviewed again in March or are they going to review our files at every executive meeting?

This is my understanding of the process... They look at your application during each excom meeting. However I could definitly be wrong about this. My friend is a MS-3 and this is where I got the information.

There was an adcom meeting last month. So the question (I believe) is asking whether anyone who was put in the competitive pool after the last adcom meeting has heard back (now that they have had the 2nd adcom mtg) and has been accepted.

I was put in the pool after the first mtg and haven't heard anything from them yet.

Anyone know if they are actually changing the "status page" this year (still says "complete")? It would be nice to know, so I don't have to keep checking the page.
