I was a psychology major with a 3.91 GPA in undergrad. I am now completing a M.A. in Communication. While pursuing the M.A. in Communication, I realized that what I really want to do is research in counseling psychology. So, this year, I applied to 8 Counseling Psychology Ph.D. programs, interviewed at 5 schools (U of Oregon, Seton Hall, Albany, Buffalo, and U of Denver), and was rejected by all of the programs. 🙁 I was offered admission to University at Albany's M.S. program in Mental Health Counseling and Boston College's M.A. program in Counseling Psychology after being turned down by their PhD programs. I am wondering if anyone has any recommendations about which program to attend? My ultimate goal is admission to a Ph.D. program in Counseling or Clinical Psychology afterwards. Another option is to try to find a job as a research assistant and then apply again in a year or two. Please let me know what you think! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.🙂

Hi!

I just got an immediate rejection from Albany's PhD Counseling program, and was offered an interview at their master's counseling program. I'm curious - what did you decide to do? Did you go to the master's program interview?

I worry that the master's program is a money-making venture. Apparently they have not funding for master's students, which is troubling considering that I could pour a whole lot of money into that master's degree and come out with what???

They publish no outcome data that I could see regarding their master's program. Did you find a good ranking list for master's programs in counseling psych?

I hope someone who knows about this can shed some light...
