Hey there.. anyone for UC, or who rotated there know.. if they tend to give their rotating Sub-Is interviews?

My friend ( US MD student ) is trying to plan his away rotations , and is hoping to do one at UC to get an interview. His scores alone may not be enough to get him an interview.

I know a student who did an away rotation at U of C, got a recommendation from the attending on his service, and subsequently was not offered an interview. I believe his step 1 score was less than mean. I know he had interviews at other academic programs in the midwest. hope that helps, even if it's not optimistic.

Just speculating, but if his scores are not good enough, even if they do guarantee interviews to rotating students, this would be more of a "courtesy interview", and he would still be unlikely to match based on scores, etc.

I think this is a big point that people seem to miss with aways in general - for the most part they are not going to make a candidate competitive for a spot they otherwise would have no shot at. They might help a candidate who is going for a little bit of a "reach" school; but not one that is essentially out of reach.

I might disagree a bit. In general this will probably be true, but if you are on the PD/Chairman's service and you absolutely blow them away, I think it can go a long, long way to beefing you up at a place, but then again, I have never been on that side of the decision process so it might not. Then again, it is probably difficult to blow them away, and not something that you can expect to be doing.

I think the answer everyone's getting at is that it depends on how much your friend thinks he's "more than his numbers."

I'd say just go for it. In general, you'd like to think you'll get an interview. But, it's actually not any more comfortable getting an automatic interview that may even conflict with another interview and you're left wondering if it's real or just polite? Sure it's a place to rank, but doesn't help you out if they aren't ranking you...

work hard, show your interest and who knows what could happen!
