University of Cincinnati MS in Physiology

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm considering applying as well.
I would appreciate more information.

I don't much about it other than that it's a fairly new program and the applications aren't available yet. I got an email from one of the admissions people and they basically just said the same thing as the website: app is not ready yet so in the meantime you can prepare the following items... blah blah blah

does anyone know how long it's been around? i haven't been able to find any info on its past success... or even if it has a past at all.

Based on this post from December '05, I assume it's a new program.
I love the curriculum. Although the program may be new, students will be in well established med & grad school courses. In the two big med school courses MA student performance is ranked against the med students.
I think this looks like a really good program.

New Master's Program is Just What the Doctor Ordered
12/02/2005

A one-year Master’s program in Physiology could be just what college graduates need to strengthen their academic credentials in preparation for application to U.S. medical schools. The new curriculum has been approved for the Master's (M.S.) Degree awarded by the Department of Molecular & Cellular Physiology at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Unveiling the new program today, Chip Montrose (Professor and Chairman of Molecular & Cellular Physiology) said “The program exposes students to the rigors and excitement of medical school coursework, and hot topics of biomedical research that drive medical discovery.”

Robert Banks (Professor) explained “Students in the program get a side-by-side comparison with first year medical students, as they are enrolled in Medical Physiology and in Medical Biochemistry — among the top predictors of success in medical school.” During the spring quarter, students are enrolled in graduate courses and then during the summer quarter write a thesis that reviews a current topic of significance in medical physiology. Completion of this "gap year" program provides credentials that allow direct comparison of the Physiology graduates with current medical school students, an important and unusual milestone during application to medical schools. Full details.

Has anyone attended this program? Had any experience with it? It compares itself to Georgetown and EVMS but I haven't heard much about it, although I'm thinking of applying as a back up to other SMPs. I have included the website below. Thanks!

Both GT and UC are 11 month programs, but one difference I noticed was that GT's starts the summer before the program, whereas UC's starts in the fall and ends after the next summer. I'm also not sure if GT requires a thesis like UC does. This basically means you would have the summer before med school off with GT but not with UC...correct me if I'm wrong.

It also appears that UC does not recommend applying to med school during the program, which kind of defeats the whole purpose of doing an 11 month SMP, IMO. I guess they can't stop you from applying, though:

The strongest application can be made after completion of the program. At that stage, the student has the broadest experience and the longest list of accomplishments. While the two medical school courses carry substantial weight in the deliberations of medical admissions groups, the commitment to complete the program and performance in a larger selection of courses will also weigh heavily.

Students are counseled after the end of the Fall quarter concerning their performance, and exceptional students may be encouraged to apply to medical school while still in the Master's program. It should be noted that it is a College of Medicine policy that students in any Master's Program who are accepted at University of Cincinnati will be required to successfully complete the Master's degree prior to starting medical school.

it is a brand new program. from the previous poster's quote though i don't really understand that last paragraph. to get in the next year/cycle you would need to put in your amcas app that late summer/early fall, not after the fall semester, it would likely be too late i would think. i would think the best approach would be to put your amcas up and hope that your current app is good enough to at least get you an interview, and then update your application by the time you would have an interview.

what do you guys think?

is there any word on the program's connection to UC admission?

Yeah I assume like most SMP's you have somewhat better odds of getting in there, but only if you do well. Their site says something about getting an interview there as "practice", so it does look like all of the SMP'ers get interviews.

About the application thing, yeah I agree that the paragraph I quoted doesn't really make any sense. If you applied after the fall it would be too late for next year, so you may as well wait until summer anyway. This just doesn' make sense. Also, the idea that not all pre-med students would be encouraged to apply for med school the following year doesn's make much sense either, as these students have almost certainly picked an 11 month program for precisely this purpose. We're probably just reading too much into it..chances are it works just like GT and the others.
