Hey has anyone heard back from U of I yet about interviews for the class of 2017?? I know some people have gotten rejection letters concerning grades so far but I have been anxiously waiting to hear back from the school about interviews.

I'm OOS, haven't heard anything. Going by last year's trends, I'm guessing that we'll hear by next week, since invites went out 1/10 last year?

I wouldn't be expecting to hear back until later this month. Patience!

this is going to be a long couple of weeks then, thanks!

I'm in state, I've heard nothing and every day I am slowly dying of fear and impatience. Last year interview invites were sent on 1/10, all on the same day. The portal was updated before letters were sent out. So check that first. I'm expecting it should be around 1/10, maybe a little later if anything.

As for rejection letters, the only people I have heard that got them are the three people that posted on the rejection letter thread. Last year rejection letters were sent on the same day (12/8) and the portal wasn't updated until much later. I would like to be hopeful and say if you haven't received a letter by now you won't be getting one, as last year everyone who got one received it on the same day. They were supposedly sent out 12/17 this year. The portal has not been updated for those people so just because your status still says "application in review" doesn't mean you haven't been rejected.

Clearly, I've been doing a lot of thinking about this....obsessively checking the portal / the interview thread / the rejection thread / Illinois thread. 😕

me tooo! i just check it everyday. I know I made it past grades because I corresponded with the admissions office. good luck to you

Did admissions say that everyone who passed grades (phase I) didn't get a rejection or was it specific to your case?

Wait what?? Did you call the admissions office and just ask them???

If you made it past phase I you would not have received a rejection letter so far, those that went out were just for grades I BELIEVE, since they were not in office basically all winter break to evaluate applications. I emailed the Admissions woman with a question about my GPA around November and she told me not to worry about it because they were done with Phase I and my app made it to phase II. You can call at anytime and talk with them about your application they're really nice.

Hey guys I just called the U of I and asked if they could check if I made it past Phase I. The lady told me that rejection letters for those that had not made it past Phase I were sent already, so if I didn't receive one that I most likely made it. She then checked on the computer anyways, and told me I did make it!!!!! She told me they were "wrapping up Phase II decisions" and we would know "very, very soon" if we got an interview or not. So, since last year's date was 1/10 I'm gonna guess it should be around that date that we will know!!!

Check this link out too:

Basically, Phase I is grades and GRE score. Phase II is experience, personal statement, LOR's, leadership skills, etc. Phase III is interview. Once you make it past the grades/GRE phase, they don't consider those things again. The final decision is 75% Phase II score and 25% interview score.

eeeee I'm so nervous, and if I don't get in here I don't know what I'll do!!

Saltshaker, did you apply anywhere else this cycle? Best of luck! :luck:

I applied to Mizzou, Wisconsin, and Illinois. I was rejected from Mizzou already though 🙁. I'm in-state for Illinois, and I'm really banking on getting in. Wisconsin doesn't have interviews, and they said they'd let us know in March sometime. I'm just assuming that because I didn't even make it to the interview round for Mizzou, I will also get rejected from Wisconsin.

Grades were really my weak point, so that's why I'm ecstatic about making past Phase I AND the fact that they don't consider Phase I scores in the final decision!!!!!! I was very confident in all other aspects of my application, so I feel much better now. Still worried though, I don't want to jinx it by saying that :scared::scared::scared: Knock on wood!!!

Thanks for the luck, I really really need it! I will be incredibly devastated if I don't get in. 😱

how much animal, vet, and leadership experience do you have??

how much animal, vet, and leadership experience do you have??

When I first submitted my application, this was the part I was confident in. Now that I know I made it past the grades part and this is what the committee is reviewing, I'm completely second guessing myself.

Experience:
I have ~2000 hours with a mixed animal vet. There I've worked with large animal, small animal, and wildlife.
I have ~100 hours with multiple veterinarians (though I only put down the name of the head veterinarian in charge) when I shadowed at an animal hospital in Thailand. I worked a lot with exotics and equine, as well as some small animal.
I have ~20 hours of animal experience from working at a zoo with exotics.

That's all my experience. I'm worried now because even though I think I have a decent amount of hours, I don't know how the committee will feel about it mostly being with one vet

Leadership activities and what not:
Position in a sorority, pre-vet club president, went to Honduras with Global Medical Brigades, I also studied abroad in Thailand where I worked hard to seek out vet experience and, as I mentioned above, shadowed there as much as I could. I'm in a few other clubs and honor societies but...nothing special.

Thoughts? Good enough?? Competitive? 😕

What about you guys? Let me know!!

I am very impressed with your 2000 hours of mixed animal experience. It might work in your favor that you got additional vet experience in a foreign country. Not a lot of applicants have that type of experience. If you have the chance, see if you can volunteer/work with another type of veterinarian while you are in school or still at home. If you get an interview, these additional experiences will help you during the interview. Plus, it shows the interviewers that you are still determined to be a vet.

I like that you are involved with other organizations other than Pre-Vet Club. (Kudos on being the president!)

I am worried about your animal experience. I am not sure what is an acceptable number of hours or what would be considered diverse. 😕 You could ask Tco.

When I was working on getting experience, I landed a shadow position at a vet office and figured that vet experience is better than animal experience....after all, vet experience is animal experience, only with the added bonus of being under supervision of a vet, right? After shadowing for about a year I became the vet tech. At my animal hospital I not only assist with surgery, monitor anesthesia, restrain animals during appointments, but I also do all the kennel work too...among other things like blood draws and what not. I'm the only vet tech there. So I am hoping that they will realize that my "vet" experience isn't just observing a surgery. I do a lot of what would be considered "animal" experience too, with large, small, and wildlife.

That is a good idea though about working on other types of experience before my interview...that is, if I get one. I'm extremely worried :/

You are definitely fine. My friend got in last year with about 95% of their experience being small animal.

I also have a question about animal experience. So far I have...

10,000 ..roughly.. as a vet tech in a mixed animal office (we see food/large and small animals)

I haven't added up all my other animal experience yet, which will be mostly exotic and food animal, because i am applying for this next round comming up but I see people asking about working for more than one vet. I have mostly worked under one vet - the one that owns the office. I have worked with two other vets in the same office and only one vet that doesn't work in this same office. Should I go out and shadow in other vet offices or does it matter at all? Its hard for me to shadow other places since I work so much at this office and take a full course load.

I am hoping to get accepted to UofI this year comming up.

Schools usually say that they like to see a variety of experience, so since you have worked with both large and small animal at one clinic, I'd say that's good. Also, working with one vet means that they know you well and can write you a good recommendation. The only reason I can think of to work with more vets is for networking - knowing a lot more vets at different clinics will mean that when you start applying for jobs after graduation, they will know who you are and more about you than what's written on a resume.

Hey! What do you mean you checked online and you made it?? Mine still says "application under review" when I check online!

Thanks!

They called the admissions office to see if they moved past phase I nothing is updated on the status page yet.

So nervous! SO NERVOUS! Should be soon, I'm guessing this week and at the latest next................................................. :scared: :boom:

Don't even THINK about next week being the time. It will be this week. SDN decided it, so it must be. 😏

Hey you guys,

I called them this morning and asked about where they were in the general admissions process. The woman on the phone notified me that they are done with phase II and they ARE sending out information this week, via postal service. Cross our fingers!

Good luck you all! I hope you guys get good news! :luck:

Saltshaker - I think your vet experience looks good but keep in mind they score you on more than the number of hours you have. Your personal statement, supplemental essay, and non-vet/animal activities also play a big role in your acceptance.

Something else to keep in mind, whether or not you get in also depends on what the rest of the application pool looks like. The first time I applied I got an interview and the second time I had more hours and more diverse experience but I didn't make it past phase II because the applicant pool had changed significantly.

There's nothing that you can do at this point to change your app, but if you don't get in because of experience you should know that vet experience looks better to them than animal experience and they like research.

Wait so...are they not updating the portal first? My heart just started racing....this week?!? Holy holy I'm gonna die!!

And thanks Tco87, I'm hoping everything works out. I know there's absolutely nothing I can do right now to change anything but it still helps to hear people say my chances are good!

So I caved and called them being that I set up mail forwarding for the break and have gotten 0 pieces of mail from anywhere (note to self and others: never trust USPS vacation forwarding again!), I wanted to make sure I didn't get denied and they said I haven't yet! 😀 She said they should be sending invites/denials and we should get them anywhere from 7-10 days, depending on where we live and also how long it takes the committee to make the cut off since they cannot invite 500 people. :luck::luck::luck:!!!!!!! :xf:

Also, anyone know which address they'll be sending the info to? Permanent or temporary? I'm assuming temporary (school address).

Wait, you made it past Phase II?!?!?

Wildowl, did the admissions lady hint when they would change our status pages?

No, just Phase I but that made me super excited being that my undergrad GPA sucked. Sorry about the confusion.

No I understand! Good job congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was going to throw a party when I found out I made it past Phase I.....figured I should wait until Phase II at least.

👍👍👍

Oh... ok. I will keep checking. For all of the U of I applicants, best of luck this week!!!!!!! :luck::xf:

I cannot stop checking the admissions page! Good luck everyone. I hate not knowing.

Also I just called and asked and they said we'd get our mail before the online page is updated -____-

That is a real bummer. Last year the page was updated a week before I received my letter.

Does anyone know which address they will send it to? Current or permanent?

I'm guessing school address. I go to school about 30 minutes from the U of I so I should hear really really really soon....................................I'll post here first thing. 😱

I go to u of I so I should hear first then! Haha the wait is killing meeee

They should send it to your current address. If you remember on the VMCAS there was an area of the dates of which you used your temp address if that date has expired they will send it to your permanent address.
