How long did it take from the time you mailed the "offer accepted" postcard to the time your status changed on the application status page? Its been a week, I'm gettin anxious... Oh and how long did it take to be accepted to the facebook page?

Hey Snobuni, I wouldn't worry about it quite yet. When I called with the same concern, they told me that the woman who updates the status pages was out this past week due to Spring Break. She'll probably have a number of them to do this coming week, so I'm giving them until friday. If no change by then, I'll call to make sure they recieved my postcard. 😀

yeah, I wouldn't worry about it just yet. I mailed my acceptance form out on Monday morning, and my status has yet to change as well. I was accepted into the facebook group some time during the week though.

Has anyone started an Illinois Class of 2014 thread?

Thanks futurevet... You have put my mind at ease 🙂

I don't think there is an official c/o 2014 thread yet but it sounds like a good idea! And I dropped my postcard off by hand so it changed the same day, I would assume spring break would push them back by a while though!

I am a grad student from Morocco. I will come to the university of Illinois next fall. I will be staying there for minimun 9months(May 2011) or 12 months as a maximum. I will be conducting research to complete my phd, and auditing some courses in the departments of linguistics and curriculum and instruction....so nothing but serious work. Well, I will actually be given a modest month allowance, and I am looking for a co tenant with whom I can share a graduate apartment in orchad down/ashton wood(up to 400 dollars/per person and it includes all utilities according to people living there). I would like to share a room with a female. Please if you know someone who is interested let me know

Hey Everyone!

congratulations on being accepted as well! has anyone started to look at housing situations for this fall? I'm not really sure on where to look and would like to live around other veterinary students. Any suggestions?

so the facebook page... there are no posts from anyone except the admin. I wanna start posting stuff but im intimidated cuz no one else has posted anything... what do you guys think? should we start a "get to kno your class" discussion forum?

That would be cool, you should go ahead and get that started! It is lookin pretty bleak in there!

alright, alright... i started the discussion in fb 🙂.

Snobuni-
I saw your post on fb and i will post something soon...but i wanted to say to you-I grew up in Miami, FL and went to Pelican Harbor for the first time ever a couple of christmases ago! what a fantastic place, i love it! (and all the stray cats that live around there?!?) That's so cool that you are interning there.

I posted this in the other thread, but I am living in the first floor of a house in Champaign about 5 minutes from the vet school, and there is a one bedroom apartment on the second floor with its own entrance that I'm pretty sure is still for rent. If you want more info on it PM me 🙂 It will be just me and my dog on the ground floor, and we're really quiet!

Does anybody know what opportunities there are to work with large animals in the Urbana/Champaign region if one is NOT a veterinary student?

I've decided to take the year off, even if I get called off of the waitlist and Mary had recommended I get more experience with large animals to strengthen my app for next year. Unfortunately, Google hasn't been too helpful in helping me find something in that area.

Can non-vet students volunteer in the hospital?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hey TCO87,

maybe you should move to the chicago area for a year. there are *SO* many opportunities around here, plus you will become an Illinois resident while living in a great city. I was able to get research, clinical, equine and exotic experience here. I have heard that in some more rural areas about 1-2 hours away from chicago, you can find dairy and other ruminant-type vets. we are also a hop and a skip from Wisconsin-where there are also lots of large animal opportunities. you should move here asap (summer is a fantastic time to be here)-get a clinic job as an assistant (easier to acheieve with minimal animal experience), and search for volunteer opps to do around your clinic job... thats my 2 centavos.

I think it depends on your experience level and availability.

Large animal clinics are around here, but they usually require a certain number of months of commitment. This is due to it being a college town with students wanting experience falling out of every tree. If you check the outlying towns, you might be surprised how many veterinarians live in the outlying towns and maintain stables or provide care at different facilities. Unfortunately, there isn't an easy answer as to whether you can get on as a volunteer with a vet.

If you are looking for animal experience and not necessarily vet experience. I highly recommend Crosswinds Equine Rescue. They have great demonstrations that are open to the public. Training and body language seminars, as well.

Students have worked at the teaching hospital as undergrads at Illinois. I have a few good friends, who are animal caretakers and certified technicians, who work there full time. I'm not sure about availability with these economic times, whether they would hire someone for a short term position.

If you have a local vet in the Champaign/Urbana area, they would be able to help you find a place to volunteer, as well.
Better yet, call or have a meeting with Mary Kelm (at the vetschool). She was amazing when I was trying to get a foot in the door with the local clinics.

Hope this helps.

Pigsfoot - Thanks for the advice! Unfortunately, I'm only really looking for experiences in or around the Urbana-Champaign region. My fiance already lives there and has told me he's going to cover most of our living expenses. I find it hard to justify living in Chicago and paying separate rent and utilities when I could just move in with him and save money.
I wish that was an option though; I've been to Chicago and really liked it and I'm having a much easier time finding interesting potential experiences there!

Truth - Thank you too! I've actually decided to take the next year off (the decision was helped along by the fact that I've been waitlisted, lol) so I can offer more than a summer commitment to most places. I've tried googling for large animal vets in the area and haven't much luck thus far.
I'll definitely look into the Crosswinds Equine Rescue and contacting Mary. I was actually considering asking her for advice, but I wasn't sure if it was appropriate. Thank you!

I keep expecting Truth74 to pop in here and tell us how 1st year went!!! where is sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee??? we need her insights!

Yeah, I'll probably go to iVLE. I mean, we have to be there to get our ID pictures taken the 16th or 17th so might as well do something productive the 18th, right? I figure it will be another opportunity to meet people if nothing else.

i'm definitely going! a friend of mine who is going to be a 3rd year said they regretted not going because it was a great opportunity to meet everyone all at once, thus they ended up not knowing a huge amount of people in their class.

Plus, i may be a big dork, but i think it sounds fun. 🙄

Is anyone else having trouble with the links on the new student page? Hardly any of them work for me 🙁

i've had no problems with the links-i've been saving all the forms tho so i can print them out and stuff. you may want to try another browser, maybe? maybe, another computer?
