I'll be attending Iowa next Fall. You from Iowa?

Yup, I'm from Iowa; and I'm deffered from last year.

You?

I'll also be starting at Iowa next fall and am also from Iowa as well.🙂

See you guys there!

I'm from Iowa- and I'll be going to Iowa this fall too. Anyone planning on going to the Get Acquainted day? I'm not sure if it's that worthwhile.

I just received my acceptance, and I will also be at Iowa in the fall!! I'm from Ames, yes, I know, an Iowa Stater... 😳

Another In-state hawkeye here. When do we find out our communities and such? Perhaps during orientation?

Hey all- I'll be going to Iowa next fall too. I'm pretty sure during get acquainted day, we break up into our communities for about an hour, so if you go, you'll know your community then.

Yea, I'm from OOS and I was recently accepted. Do you think it's worth it to come up for the get acquainted day (about a 4.5 hour drive)? Who all is going/not going?

The day consists of a lot of mini-presentations by deans and such, with 1-hour presentations (you pick two: financial aid, housing, student life, relationships ie families). You also get to meet your community. It's from 8-2, and after 2 you can take tours of the MERF or the medical frats. It can't hurt to go.

By the way, any Ames High or Valley High kids going to Iowa next fall?

Hey guys,

got accepted in December but didn't see the thread until now...

It looks like I'm acoming to Iowa in the fall. Don't think I'll be going to the get-to-know-you day though, since I'm in Arizona and trips by air to Iowa run like $400 a pop minimum. Maybe I'll see you guys there in the fall.

is anyone here interested in doing the summer research internship?

I'm from Ames 2002.

And I'm considering the research summer.

I think I'm just going to take it easy this summer and travel in europe for about a month. I figure we should get some R&R before med school consumes our lives. 12 weeks of research would pretty much take my entire summer, so no way.

I'm considering doing it because I'm married: the money is decent and it would give my wife and me a chance to get to Iowa City 1)during peak housing-finding season and 2)with more time for her to find a job(she'll have an english ed. degree).

now to get more specific:
is anyone interested in the summer research program, and
is anyone working on the stuff that needs to be done for that program in the next few weeks?

AZ:

I've looked at the materials and possible projects, and what is needed; but haven't done anything yet.

I am planning on doing the summer research fellowship and yes I am working on the requirements. So far I have a mentor who has had me write a proposal and he is now looking it over.

I'm thinking about the reserch fellowship too. What fields are you guys planning on applying to? I think I might apply for internal medicine.

I really want to participate in the summer research fellowship, but I'm having a hard time deciding what kind of project I want to do.

What did you guys do? Did you contact your possible "mentor" first and discuss with them possible ideas? Or did you have a pretty good idea first?

Tennisguy, my mentor is an internal med doc, so I too am looking at internal medicine, specifically infectious diseases. Much fun as long as you don't catch anything:barf: . Witt105 if you haven't contacted Kathi Huebner yet I would do so immediately to tell her you're interested. I personally had a pretty good idea of what my mentor was up to before I talked to him.

Thanks Medhawk. I emailed kathi just now, but I don't know if shes in this week or not because its spring break for some students/ administration. How did you guys that are pretty far along in the research application process decide on your projects?

Did your mentor pretty much give you a good idea to run with, or were you expected to have an idea of what you wanted to do before talking with them?

Yes, I'd be interested to know this too. I'm going to email Kathi, and I've been reading through the faculty/lab profiles. If anyone has any advice, at all, I'd appreciate it.

Has anyone gotten access to ICON yet?

Also, how much time have you had to respond to the acceptance? I left town before receiving it and actually found out I was accpeted through an email from the admissions office congratulating me and telling me how to access ISIS. I'm wanting to know since I'm not at home. Thanks a lot and congrats to everyone.

I can only speak for my own experience, but that is pretty much the way to go. Look through the list of possible mentors, go to pub med and read through some of their abstracts, find a couple of people who interest you and email them. Hopefully at least one will respond. I imgagine, at least it was true for me, that your mentor will have a pretty good idea of what kind of project they would want a Pre-M1 to work on and will direct you from there. Also remember Kathi is an invaluable resource for answering these kind of questions.

Thanks again Medhawk. I just felt a little overwhelmed at first. But I've already emailed a few possible mentors and are awaiting their replies.

Anyone know what's the deal with the research ethics course we have to take if we do the summer research fellowship? How much time commitment is it? How often is there actual class? Thanks!

It's required and supposedly lasts four hours, the details can be found here: Fellowship Requirements & Opportunities . I heard people who don't attend are 67% more likely to steal another researcher's lunch from the break room fridge.

Thanks Medhawk- wow, I thought it was an actual summer-long course. That just made my day.

Another question- anyone know when Iowa is going to start sending financial aid packets?

The fin aid website is pretty vague about the timeline, anyone know a more definitive timeline for giving out financial aid?

Does anyone know if they give in state tuition scholarships to out of state students? And if they do, how many?

I saw mine on ISIS today, but havn't gotten anything in the mail yet. $41,000 in loans....

Yea, I saw mine on ISIS yesterday too. I'm OOS, so it sucks even more ... $58,000 in loans ...

Do you guys know exactly what forms we need to send in? One of my links on ISIS doesn't even work.

Hey everybody, I'll be attending Iowa in the fall as well. I'm an Iowa City native so if anybody has any questions about things to do, places to live (like which property management companies to avoid like the plague, *cough* southgate *cough*), I can hook you up. Congratulations to everybody and I'll see you in the fall!

Huh, I guess that the OOS list hasn't moved yet, maybe just shuffled a bit. My position on the alternate list hasn't moved since it was finalized last month.

Curious, has anyone that applied for summer research gotten notification yet? It's supposed to be early May... I just hate having to wait to see what my summer plans are like when it's almost summer.

I wanted to congratulate all of you who are entering UICCOM as the Class of 2011. I just finished my M1 year. If you have questions, just PM me. I would be happy to help. The only I probably can't answer is stuff about Financial Aid.

Look forward to meeting you in the Fall!

Thanks for the congrats, and to anyone else in our upcoming class that's arrived in Iowa City feel free to PM me; my wife and I just got moved in, I'm researching, and we're trying to explore the town a bit!

Hi guys, I just moved to the 5-year track so I'll be graduating with you (as well as doing rotations and half of the second-year classes with you) so welcome to Iowa! If you have any questions about the med school, etc. and want an opinion from someone who's been there a year, let me know!
