Well, I've been looking online for apartments, houses, etc., and I found a locator service. They have photos, maps, prices, and policies on their listings. I found it very helpful.

Also, I emailed the fin. aid office today about aid packges, but then realized that they are probably closed for the holiday. If they respond, I'll post it here.
So.... What's everyone doing this summer?
I'll be working 👎
I hope someone else has exciting travel plans or something.

I guess it wasn't a holiday.
They said "sometime in the next few weeks" they would email our award notifications.

I can't wait to see my financial aid package. I also hope to visit the KUMC area while at the "spring visit." Hope to meet some of you there!!!

I'm dissapointed. They are "recruiting" M1s to be with you guys at the second look this Friday and I can't do it because half of the class (including me) have a Clinical Skills lab this Friday afternoon.
Have fun!

Bummer!! 🙁 I really wanted to meet you because you've always been so friendly and helpful. It's also nice to be able to put faces with names.
I'm sure there will be plenty more opportunities to meet and greet next fall.

Is anyone else staying for Saturday too? The Office of Cultural Enhancement and Diversity is hosting a BBQ and other activities. I haven't seen any details, so I don't know the location or time yet. Mmmmmm...... baarrbequuue...... :: drools::

So how are we going to identify ourselves???? Two nametags? Secret handshake? Tightrolled pants?
Any ideas?

Hint I am an OOS... I will be staying for Saturday Too but I don't have any details as of yet!!!

🙁

This sucks

I have been calling about houses posted on the Housing Ads site. Last week I made appointments to look at a few this weekend, but now they are all rented - and I didn't even get to see them.
Does anyone think more houses will be available later, or am I scraping the bottom of the barrel now??

I'm sure more will be available later. Fourth year students are leaving, and late spring is always when people decide to move. I would drive around the neighborhood this weekend and see if there are for rent signs up, and then call and maybe get a quick look that way.

And for anyone that cares, here's KU's 2007 Match list.

http://www.kumc.edu/som/ResidencySpecialtyLocation2007Graduates.html

Always read these with a grain of salt, to a certain extent, people match into the field they want to, not everyone wants to do a plastic surgery residency at Harvard.

So was the second look today? How was it for everyone? Being in CA I am too far away to make it out there at a reasonable price.

I did end up popping into the brunch around 3. I didn't stay really long because there was a lot of us (med students) and it didn't really seem like I was needed. (That and people were coming and going from tours, so it was hard to make conversation anyway.)
I hope everyone enjoyed the second look weekend

I had a blast at the spring visit this weekend!
Friday morning could have been boring if I wasn't so excited just to be there. Some faculty talked about the new curriculum and technology, then after lunch was the financial aid talk, and we broke into smaller groups to talk to a 1st year and 4th year. Then tours and snacks, but I had to leave early.
Saturday was the SNMA barbeque. The food was great. I have missed really good bbq - none to be found where i live. I wish more incoming students had come, because this group made such a big effort to welcome us.
EVERYONE I've met at this school so far has been a great person, so I hope the trend continues with my class.

I enjoyed talking to the medical students and faculty. Everyone seemed really nice. I enjoyed the BBQ. I felt welcomed at KUMC.

I had an amazing time at the second look. I really felt welcomed at KU and felt like I was a part of the family. The BBQ was really enjoyable and all the students were extremely helpful in answering my questions. Most of the people from our class seem really down to earth. I actually felt like I was part of a family. I was kinda hoping to meet lilnoelle. Were you at the BBQ? It was also really cool seeing that at least six people from my interview day were accepted and will be attending. Anyway, unless something crazy happens I'll be at KU in July.

That's because they saved the best of us for last! 😉

Hope to see you there this fall

I popped in on the cookies and punch thing Friday from 3:00 to about 3:30. I didn't have much of a chance to talk to people because it seemed like everyone already had one of my classmates to talk to and I didn't want to butt in. I was in a black/purple flowered skirt and had a white coat on. I have light brown/reddish curly hair that doesn't quite reach my shoulders. Anyway, I doubt anyone remembers me, but I was there.

I was there.

Thanks for making the effort lilnoelle!
I have long-ish brown hair, was wearing khaki pants, and a turquiose shirt, and I was carrying a lot of stuff - coats, cookies, folders...
I don't remember seeing you there, but I wasn't at the snack session very long. There were a lot of short white coats walking around. You don't have to wear the coat every day do you??

Heres a copy of an email I recieved.

HI 🙂

I am currently a second year PT student at KU med and looking for two new roommates starting this June and August. I live in a 5 bedroom house directly across from campus at 3924 Rainbow Blvd. My current roommates include one girl, one guy, and my puppy "Gizmo", so we are in need of two more roomies (boys or girls).
Our house is very spacious, has a parking lot with assigned parking, washer/dryer, and rent will only be $260 a month.

THANKS and hope to hear from ya. 🙂

PM me if your interested in her name and email address.

Hey Everybody.
I was wondering if anyone got the results of their scholarship applications yet or have heard anything about when we should get them. Also If any of the current KU med students know about how long after you submit it you should hear back I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thanks

Hah- despite my name I *think* I will be going to UNMC.

I doubt you will get anywhere close to an accurate idea unless you polled everyone with an acceptance, and knew your exact spot on the wait list.

You should totally go to Kansas.

Cool, thanks for the info.

Does anyone know of anyone who is planning on withdrawing their acceptance? Waiting on the alternate list and just trying to get a feel for where I stand. Thanks

I hear it typically goes down to 40-50 or so on the wait list... although with my class (2009), it only got to the 20's 😱

I was born in Kansas, my Mom lives in Kansas, but I have lived in CA for 16 of the last 20 years with my Dad. I am classified as out of state for tuition purposes at KUMC.

I think the approx. $100,000 is worth it in the long run.

I am calling this week to try and convince them to give me in-state though. My family having lived in Topeka for more than 100 years may be able to help.

thanks gymbum!
where i live now, people look at me funny when i cheer for an opposing team. and one couple quit offering to babysit my dogs when i told them i'm now a jayhawk. can't wait until i can move out of hostile territory!
i never liked mizzou anyway, so i'm glad they didn't give me an interview. still, it sucked to be rejected by the home state before I had an interview anywhere else.

Officially withdrew from KUMC today... sorry everyone, but I'll only be 200 miles north. Someone will hopefully be extremely happy to get my spot. I am sad to give it up.

I am definitely keeping the user name. Unless someone wants to pay me for it. 👍

We were at the bottom of the second page so I bumped us.

Not much going on i guess.

First year's finals are Monday and Wednesday and then the shelf exam on Friday!!! Then summer 😍 (which by the way I'll be spending nearly all of my 8 weeks wading in a kiddy pool with my babies) Nothing productive for me!!! 😍

Hey I was wondering if anyone knows how closely KU tracks where you live after your residency status has been determined for tuition purposes? I currently live in Kansas with my parents and will pay in state tuition but I am going to move out before school starts. I have found some really nice places downtown but I don't want to risk losing my in state tuition for jumping the state line. I am guessing that I can just continue to use my parents address, but with all the warnings they give in state students about not living on the Missouri side I am just wondering if people have been caught doing this. Anyone know?

I would say that a good 10% of the class probably lives in Missouri - but uses their parents address. Just don't get a better grade than the gunner sitting next to you, and you're safe.

So what price range are people looking at in terms of rent per month? How many people typically live with roomates vs living alone?....anyone know or have any great ideas on where to live that is close to school, cheap, safe, and not roach infested?

Hi SlicMic
I'm not an authority on the subject because I'm new too, and from out-of-town, so maybe someone else could either back me up or give better advice. Here's what I found during my many visits:
The MO side near campus was crowded - there wasn't much off street parking, and the streets were lined with cars on both sides. I didn't like that so I quit looking. Farther into MO is the Plaza and Westport area. Nice lofts, but expensive.
The neigborhood west of Rainbow is hit and miss. Adams is good, Booth is ok, Booth Pl. is not as ok, Springfield is borderline scary, and it gets worse as you go west.
There's a neighborhood south of campus - State Line, Cambridge, Eaton, Francis - that seemed a little safer, but more expensive. South of 43rd seemed not as safe as north of 43rd.
I looked at some apartments near the Lamar exit. They were nice, and there's plenty of them. I liked Silverwood the best because it smelled clean and was well maintained. The newer apartments are farther west and farther south, like in Overland Park. That was too far for me to drive, so I didn't look at any.
There are also several apartments on Rainbow and Booth. Rainbow Ridge was ok, a lot of students live there (says the manager). The Booth apartments would be a shorter walk, but weren't as nice... think hourly rate motel next to the porn shop vs. Motel 6, where Motel 6 ain't great but it's better than the alternative.

I ended up in a house in the neighborhood south of school. It's more expensive than I wanted to pay, but it has a garage so my car will be safe, and my landlord is super nice.

Try this link for the housing ads.... and good luck!

I just want to remind everyone that one needs to live on the Kansas side to maintain Kansas residency. I know that some people that have parents living in KC may claim their parent's house as their own and keep an apartment in Missouri, but that will probably get a little tricky, especially if you live close to the school where people can see you walking to your home. I also wouldn't like this alternative because it might be necessary to keep your real residency completely mum from classmates. I'm not saying someone would turn you in, but would you really want to take the chance? ($64,000 question)

I'll back that - I'd say you are pretty accurate. Plaza and Westport are $$$ and in Missouri which could make them $64k more expensive.

I lived at Malvern for a year b/w Adams and Booth. Not a ton of med students, but I didn't have a noise problem. They are super cheap, the manager (Michael is super nice) and they are in easy walking distance. However, I'm not sure if they are the safest. I didn't have problems, but was a bit nervous being outdoors after dark.

I lot of students live in Johnson Med and Rainbow Ridge. Rainbow Ridge will set you back a little more, but they are gated and just got new A/C, heat, refrigerators and stoves since I have started school. Johnson Med isn't quite as fancy but the rent is lower.

South of campus has some nice, safe houses. Someone got their car stolen this past year, but I think it was an isolated incident.

Lamar is a great bet. Several classmates live out there, its nicer, safer, and not a bad commute.

Good luck! See you in July!

Does anyone know how are the apartments in "Malvern Hills?" I am OOS and looking to get one there. Is this a good choice???

What did you learn in your clinical skills lab?

Hey guys.
What does anyone think about living out in Lenexa? I know its kinda far but I found a really nice place in a really quiet area. Would any of the current students recommend this or not? Thanks.
