University of Kentucky Anyone???

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Why are there so many "views" to this subject but no one answering?

I think it's because no one would ever wish Kentucky on anyone else...not even their worst enemy.

lol....WHAT? I don't see any signs that was a joke, and given your history I won't take it as one. I really find it amazing you give advice to young people on schools to attend given your biased nature and utter disregard for some schools.

coesp,

there are a few UK'ers around here. Hopefully they'll see your thread and offer some advice.

Whaaaat???? Please! The University of Kentucky is a top notch institution and was ranked somewhere in the middle of the top 50 American Universities. It's a great school. And Lexington is a major city, too--it's nothing like the rest of the rural state...and there's nothing wrong with rurality (sp?) either.

I'm not suprised by your post, though--from what I've seen, Berkeley grads are the intellectual snobs of the academic world.

Hey Everyone!
I have an interview for UK's med school in January and I want to find out anything I possibly can before I go.
Thanks!!🙂

Ask a question and I will answer it for you.

I guess what I really want to know is if there was anything that you wished you knew before you went to your interview.

No, not really. I wish I had a better tour guide, I'll tell you that. I am one of the people that give tours this year once the interviews are over and I make a point to talk about each class that we have 1st and 2 yr and the format, etc. I also talk about the diff extracurricular activities that go on, and just explain a lot of stuff in general that people don't necessarily know to ask. My tour guide (they are all 2nd yr students who volunteer their time) sucked. I came in not even knowing 2 of the classes existed adn that we would learn the entire physical exam by the end of 1st year. None of those things would have changed my mind about the school, but I just wish she'd been more informative. 🙄 If you interview is on a saturday, that is better because it is more relaxed. We don't have class, so we aren't running around, dodging people in the hallways during the interview, etc. It's very quiet on the weekend. But of course, on tuesday, you get to see more students so you can see if they look happy or not 😉 or talk to them if you want.

Thanks for the response!
I have one more question (although it's kinda stupid). Does UK send out their acceptances in big or little envelopes? ... in other words, should I freak if a letter arrives in a small envelope after my interview?

You will find out via a phone call!! (Uk is very friendly) Typically, the committee will meet a week or two after your interniew and make the decision then. If possible, you may even get a call that same day--mine came at 5:30 from one of my interviewers. If you don't get a call, it's not automatically bad news--sometimes they are too busy. But, you are free to call the next day and ask. At your interview, they will tell you what day you can call and find out. Then they send a LITTLE envelope with one letter in it. I was accepted in Nov, and a big envelope didn't come until a few months later.

Hi Coesp, I hadnt seen the thread before. I interviewed at UK a little while ago and somehow talked them into accepting me. UK is a great school IMO. I really like the way the curriculum is set up... the 1st year posting could tell you more than me im sure, but what I gathered was that they put more of the responsibility on the student to work on their own so less required class time. Plus, the curriculum is more integrated/modern/problem based than many of other schools I checked out. I liked the smaller class size (about 104), the facilities, and the people. If you are not familiar with Lexington it is a great mid-sized college town and its only an hour drive to Cincinatti or Louisville if you want occasional bigger city ammenities.

ummm... Things I was concerned about before I went were that they seem to be having some changes ?forced? on them by the new president- apparently the Dean is out. A faculty member at Univ of Louisville Med school also said UK may be changing the curriculum somewhat... However, the folks at UK I spoke with said this wasnt the case. So, apparently, no worries but you may want to check yourself. Another possible negative, again from the many UL folks I work with, was that the exposure in the clinicals at UK might be limited because (according to them) Lexington is not a big medical center. But, all of the UK grads Ive spoken with have said that is NOT the case.

Anyway, I was very impressed with the school. Now Ive got to decide if Im going to attend. Good luck. BTW, the interview was very laid back.

Forgot to say that I didnt get a call... I called them and was told over the phone. Acceptance letter was small. Good luck.

I wouldn't listen to what one school has to say about another. You have to remember that they are rivals. One reason U of L turned me off was that they are intent on pointing out Uk's so-called negatives when you go there. Often, these turn out not to be true. Believe me, the stuff they say gets back to the admissions department and they are like "wtf?" So don't listen to any bashing one school does over the other--just go by what you see for yourself. 🙂

KyGrlDr2B:

I thought the same thing, only the opposite at UK. I am currently attending U of L as a first year and I got exactly the opposite experience. I got the bashing from the UK end. I know that here at U of L we try to give a fair impression of our school without talking about our #1 competitor in a negative manner. I'm sure it all depends on your interviewer and your host tour guide but generally, we do not do bashing. I'm sure UK is the same, generally. My advice for the applicants...go where you feel most comfortable. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask anyone. UK and U of L students alike were friendly. It's the admissions departments that can often be intimidating. To comment on the physical exam, here we learn the physical exam (head to toe) in the first semester. We interact with standardized patients (SPs) within the first two weeks of medical school. Clinical exposure is our best selling point, in my opinion. There are many hospitals in the area. Good luck, wherever you choose!

i'm in a weird situation. i was going to submit my secondary to UK but i realized that i had to give my LOR writers this form to fill out instead of them sending the letter they already wrote for me. to make matters even worse, they already sent the letters to UK. these guys are extremely busy (aren't they all) and i did not want to trouble them any more than i already have. so i didn't think it was worth it and i sadly dropped UK off my list of schools.

but after looking thru this thread, i decided to log back on to my seconday just to remember what i gave up and wat da... they posted that my LOR have been received!!! does this mean they are acceptable!?! should i give them a call? pee-curl-er...

I would call. Many of the schools I applied to requested I use a specific form that I did not use. I did use a rating form supposed to be acceptable by med schools but put out by the premed committee at my school though... so my sit. may be different. Either way I would call.
