Omg, I totally forgot about the ass-biting pic! Sorry to subject you to that.

Faxed everything over today, including my PMP application. I'm so excited, I can't wait to start school!

A friend of mine has been pushing me to buy a house/condo in Baltimore. It really makes a lot of sense over renting, since I'll be there for at least 4 years. I just have issues with proximity to the med school.

LS, I'm going to email your husband this weekend re: real estate in B'More.

PS wtf happened to SQ? I haven't seen her around for a while.

Several people have PMed me with their info. Keep it coming!
You all sound like incredibly interesting people!! Can't wait to meet you all!

1. Real Name
2. Location (City, if you're in Maryland. City/State if you're not.)

snail mail. people were saying thick envelope so when i didn't see a large envelope, i figured i didn't hear anything. but it's a small thick envelope. tricky tricky!

seriously, GOOD LUCK. i completely bombed my interview if that helps.

:luck: :luck: :luck: :luck:

WOOHOO!!! GO SPEEDRACER!!!

The only difficult decision you need to make is, start with beer, or just skip straight to the hard stuff?

Congrats, man!

Tweetledee, don't you feel a bit of the stomach flu coming on. I bet you could turn green if you really thought about how ill you feel. Perhaps you should go home and lie down so as to be a more productive employee next week.

If you just happened to check your mail on the way to bed, no one could blame you.... :meanie:

Hey plz,

Have you recieved any info about the program since then.

Re PMP: I sent in what I got during the interview.

Yeah, I got an email a couple of days ago saying that I got into the program.

I also sent the form in right after I got my acceptance in December.

Oh okay cool. Maybe I will get in. I really wanted to do it to be a little more prepared for the fall. Do you know how many people get into the program?

OMG, I GOT INNN!! I called the admissions office to find out about the email and they told me 😀

haha, now I have no excuse to fake having the stomach flu 😛 although, it is still VERY tempting 😉 I agree, a good nap would allow me to be a more productive employee next week 😀 I'll see what I can pull off 👍 😛

Hey LW, I totally missed what the PMP program is? Mind posting a little info about it? thanks!

The program runs from May 30-July 7th. It's a 6-week "preview"...they call it "an intense preparation for medical school." There are lectures, labs, and small group sessions. I think it's geared towards people who are apprehensive or who (like me) have been out of undergrad for a while, to help you get back into the flow. It's a head start on the material, study/test-taking techniques, getting to know profs and other med students, etc. The letter says, "Over the years, program evaluations have clearly demonstrated that PSP makes a significant difference in academic performance during the basic science years."....I think that's what sold me.

It's stipended ($1600 for the program...this is not too shabby, and better than paying FOR it!), but enrollment is limited. The letter that I received said that there were only 7 slots available. Acceptance is based on 1) Need, and 2) Timeliness of application.

email [email protected] for more info.

Hey guys. I leave for spring break and the thread explodes with acceptances. Congrats to everyone!

Hey Lucid, can you send me that spreadsheet you made on preferred lenders (i'll send a PM)? I checked my email today and had 2 from MD financial aid asking me to send all of that in, so I guess I need to get to work.

And LW, add me to that list of names. I'll send you a PM as well.

Thanks guys for the congratulatory wishes! 😀 and thanks LW for the info about PMP. I actually don't think I'm going to be able to do it since I'll be working full-time... 🙄 But I'm excited! As of now, I'm definitely considering attending 🙂

Hah, I just got my Drexel financial aid statement, and it has a total unmet aid to the tune of $18,000.

*hugs* Maryland
I emailed the financial aid advisor at my state school, and they offered me a $1500 scholarship. Hmmm....four more years in mid-Missouri with almost all loans, or four years in Baltimore with all loans and in-state tuition after one year? I think I'll take Baltimore. 😉

wait we can get in-state after one year???

I just wanted to say congrats to everyone who's in. I finally made my decision, and i will definitely be joining you in the fall..... so excited!!!!

Yes it seems it is possible, but certain requirements must be met. Many are simple, such as continuously renting/owning property in Maryland for 12 consecutive months, pay state taxes, have a Maryland drivers license. The hard one, I think, is that the majority of your income must come from a job, spouse, or parent in Maryland. They do not consider aid from loans or grants, but supposedly some students are challenging that right now and a university board is going to meet in June to re-evaluate their criteria. For me this last one is not an issue...I am married and my husband will be working fulltime in Maryland. If you are single and still dependent on your parents, it is much harder. They gave us a form with all the criteria on it at our interview, so I suggest you read everything and keep that in mind when making plans to attend, to increase the chances that you will qualify for in-state tuition after a year (who wouldn't want to save all of that money!)

yeah i looked at the nine requirements on some other webpage. that's good that it can definitely be done; some schools like refuse. unfortunately it's difficult if you are a dependant and what not. and how are you supposed to get a job while in med school? how else are you supposed to prove that you're not in maryland just for the university?

maybe i should be thinking less of that and more on how i'm gonna get my butt kicked by classes....

OK, so I've decided that I'm really serious about buying a condo in the area near the med school. Does anyone know of/have any experience with a good lender that you could recommend to me? I currently bank with Bank of America, but I know nothing about what they offer in terms of home loans. I guess I could just check out their website 😀

I am SO FRICKIN JAZZED about possibly buying my own place. What are the better neighborhoods around the med school area? Federal Hill seems nice, but pricey. I think there are a couple of properties for sale near the med school itself, but will that area be safe?

So much to think about for the next few weeks!

And to the new folks...If you haven't done it yet, PM me with your info!

I've been compiling a list, and I will be sending it out to those who give me their email addresses. Right now I only have like 6 people! Come on, where are all the Marylanders?!?

(P.S. Do "Fear the Turtle" and "Hell in a shell" apply to us at UMB, or is that exclusively UMCP?)

I'm not sure how exactly it is done, but I know its possible because I had at least two students I talked to on the interview day tell me they knew people who qualified. Maybe persistence pays off? Also, you may not be able to prove that you aren't in Maryland simply for school, but if you can prove that you want to stay in Maryland post-med school you might be able to qualify that way. I'm not really sure how it works. Honestly, I would attend the school even if I had to pay OOS tuition all four years, but if I can get in-state you can bet I will try.

How about getting in-state tuition for the first year? I wonder if any oos applicants have been able to pull that off. it'd really REALLY nice to be able to get instate tuition! 👍

Hmm..I guess I should probably call the finaid office and ask

not unless you've been living in maryland for 12 months already

I have been, but my parents still claim me as a dependent

Does anyone know what kind of laptop we will be getting? I'm trying to buy a new bag, but wanted to know what size laptop it will need to hold. Hopefully they won't give us something huge.

They are IBM laptops. Not a particularly slim model.

I asked this question during the lunch with the 1st and 2nd-year students.

The reply that I got was, "nice ones."

Gee, thanks for clearing that up. 🙄

I guess we won't find out until we register?

Boo...I really wanted to buy a new bag. I guess I'll have to wait, since it seems silly to shell out all kinds of money with the possibility that the computer won't fit.

Except you're really trying to buy a small than average size book bag, it should fit. The bag I presently have is just an average size and my laptop (Compaq) which are not particularly slim kind-of-computers does fit. But I know there's this thing that we always want to be very sure about b/4 taking certain actions...feel u.
