That reminds me of that commerical for Comcast or whatever, with the "slowlys". Those turtles are so cute!

Hey guys,

That turtle looks great!!!Well just wanted to pop in and say hello. I tend to just read what you guys talk about and get a laugh here and there. Hey LS congrads on the house.

I love those commercials..they really crack me up.

And Coz, I know I am also a Terp now, but as they say at my school...once a Tiger, always a Tiger. (If the two team ever play each other, I'd probably root for Maryland just because they stand a better shot of winning) 😀

Hah, frontrunner 🙂 I don't know how you're supposed to choose in that situation, though. I don't really have to worry about it, Towson sucks in every sport but lacrosse, and they aren't even that good there.

It seems like everyone always stays with their undergrad. team anyway. As a former wolverine it's not like I have much choice anyway.

GRRRRRRRRRR.....

Keep in mind that there are at least 2 wolverines in here.... 😡

Hmmmm....something about a turtle overtaking a wolverine just doesn't seem right to me. Still, we all know a tiger could eat them both. 😉

Can't we all just get along? Haha

Bah...I keep surfing the internet when I should be writing a paper that was due this week. Damn you SDN. I shall retire to my study and hopefully get some work done. See you all on the other side.

Happy Friday everyone!!!!!!

Yay!!! Paycheck lady left a surprise on my desk this morning. 🙂

I get to go see my house tomorrow!!!

Oh, and I'm buying a grill from a UMD urology resident!!!

Hey, I need to ask a "girly" question.

My friends and I are throwing a bridal shower for our friend at her mom's house on Saturday, and I'm in charge of making the punch. Only problem: I don't have a punchbowl. I do have a large, fancy glass pitcher, however. Do you think it's appropriate to serve the punch in the pitcher, and then just refill it with a reserve stock that can be kept in the fridge? Or should I go out an buy a bowl/ladle? I like the pitcher idea, since it's less messy, but it's kinda unorthodox. What do you guys think? And why am I even stressing over this? 🙂

I do have a punchbowl but no punch cups or ladle. You can borrow my punchbowl if you want. I bet you could buy a clear ladle for very cheap.

Actually scratch that. I do have cups. I have 13, although none of them match the bowl technically, but 11 of the cups match each other and then there is a pair of different ones. You'd just have to get a ladle. But you are welcome to it.

OMG, LS would you mind lending the bowl to me for this weekend? I'm actually meeting up with Greg tomorrow morning before the shower, so if you gave it to him, he could give it to me.

I have a ladle at home, so it's just a matter of the bowl. Another bridesmaid is bringing the cups, so I'm off the hook there.

Thanks so much! I totally owe you one!

Yeah no problem. I'll wash it tonight and send it along. Just so you know when you get it, it is one of those cake stand/punchbowl things. So it may look like a cakestand, but if you turn it over, the "lid" of the cakestand is actually the bowl and sits in the upside down stand part. It'll make sense when you see it and the picture on the box.

The "rules" surrounding wedding activities are kind of silly. You'd think it would be perfectly fine to use a pitcher instead of a bowl, but I guess it just depends on how uptight the people at the shower are. 😉

happy friday indeed!!!

And I have to agree... terrapins rule all. Because. Well. Um, they make a good soup...

Happy cinco de Mayo everyone!

Hooray Cinco de Mayo! Unfortunately today we're having a going away party for a friend who is moving to NC. She's making a TON of money, but sad to see her off.

It was just a honest question, which I didn't want to hurt nobody's feeling (hence my forewarning when asking my question that UMD was still my #1). Sorry if I hurt anybody, but its always my philosophy to be humble, open, and honest. One of reasons why I love UMD is because of the friendliness of the students (during interview day, and exact words I wrote in my LOI), but I'm very much hurt by certain comments of an anonymous 3rd year 👎 . I guess I'm seen as a black sheep because I made fun of my one and only state-school which I can't get in because I'm too naive to get in and don't understand nothing about matchlists or nothing about medicine. Nevertheless, I do count my blessings, but my cup overfloweth if Maryland poureth  !

Dude, I have not been on this thread in a while and just saw this comment. If my comments hurt your feelings then you should seriously rethink medicine as a career. The students at UM are cool and friendly but, you will not get along with everyone and honestly I don't think my comments were that offending ... all I was doing was pointing out your contradictions. If you think you are a black sheep b/c of the comments you made and the feedback you got, then you need to look at your self confidence. If this hurt your feelings then you are going to be in for a rude awakening when you actually get to med school and the residents or attendings point out how stupid you are (not b/c you are actually stupid but, b/c as a med student you are the lowest on the totem poll and you will be made feel like a waffling idiot many times a day - no matter how smart you truly are). You must grow a back bone and realize that sometimes when you make comments that everyone doesn't agree with, that it isn't anything personal.

For all those in the class of 2010 – I commend you for going out and partying and meeting each other prior to med school … it will make the transition so much easier. Plus, I think it’s great that you are all having fun b/c that is what life is about. If anyone needs some more info about anything feel free to pm me – I wish that someone would have given me some pointers when I was starting … would have made it a little easier 😉

I've been following this thread for a while now, but thought I'd finally pop in and say hi. Since i graduated in 2005 and am spending an year abroad, I'm feeling anxious and excited about starting med school and meeting you all this August. 😀 lol...i actually can't wait till orientation b/c I've been stuck in an alcohol-dry state for the past 6 mo. and need to get my party on! 😛

loveumms, what are the pointers you'd give us first years? Also, what's the campus gym like? I remember being told during interview day that it's on the top floor of a parking garage. Finally, what's the social scene like during first year (i.e., are there class-sponsored events, student group events, happy hours, etc.)?

I too have been poking around on this thread. I am an out-of-stater from PA, and I am thrilled to be a part of this amazing institution! I just signed a lease in Fayette Square yesterday, so now I am REALLY excited.

I am moving in 8/5, and would love to meet up with anyone before orientation... do a lot of you already live in Baltimore? Is anyone a little bit nervous? I am... 🙂 Looking forward to meeting you all!

Welcome nittany and Docster! There aren't many of us that are in B-more already. Coz is there. I live about 30-40 mins away, just outside of DC, and Lady Wolverine lives in DC I think (maybe Bethesda). akestler lives somewhere nearby too. Lady Wolverine will be moving to B-more in late May I think, and I'll be there late June. I'm not sure about SuzieQ, exactly when she's moving. Congrats on signing a lease!

Gujarat state in India has had a prohibition law in effect ever since partition -- having to do with the state being Mahatma Gandhi's birthplace. But the funny thing is that just from the amount of alcohol confiscated on its way into Gujarat (no other state in India has prohibition), Gujarat might actually have the highest demand for alcohol in the country. Also, some people are exempt from the Gujarat prohibition law:

-Members of the military are given liquor rations
-Those with a medical prescription can legally buy liquor
-Foreigners like me with passports can buy limited "units" of liquor...though none of the people I know here can legally drink so I've never bothered trying to buy any liquor -- lol I don't want to take the chance of being busted for dealing alcohol. :scared:

Anyways, I've gotten a chance to visit Bombay, Goa during New Year's (the Ibiza of India), and a seaport called Vizag where I partied it up with a couple other people here from the U.S. on scholarships.

Nittanylionmd, when did you get the Fayette Square lease? I filled out some roommate preference paperwork and prelim documents on 4-18, but haven't heard back yet about any potentional roommate pairing or anything else for that matter. I'm hoping to move into Uni Suites during the first week of August as well!

You have to fill out the application, guarantee, and roommate pref form... once you give them the 25 app. fee and 250 security deposit the room is yours. I am living in the 7 bedroom townhome, what about you? 🙂

hmmm... i did all that as well. I asked for the 2 br apt. I remember that the person in the leasing office said she should get back to me by the first or second week of May. I might try emailing them from here this week to see what's up.

If we end up signing a lease on the 2-bedroom apartment at Centerpoint, we would be moving in around July 7.

We just went to a furniture store today that was going out of a business and scored a sweet deal on a sofa and recliner. Woot woot....all of our furniture is hand-me-down from family and friends (and thus really beat up and definitely outdated), so we've been trying to update a few pieces. I'm really excited in case you can't tell, and just wanted to share it with all you cool folks, even though I doubt you really care. 😛

Yay! Welcome, Docster and nittany!

So... do they actually prescribe alcohol for medical reasons? Is it used for pain management?

I don’t have a whole bunch of wisdom to pass on except to enjoy your summer - med school will be here before you know it.

Also, I think I have said this before – don’t get too caught up in being a gunner. Everyone will do just fine, it can get very stressful diving into anatomy and everyone is so stressed out about doing well that it can become overwhelming very fast. You got into med school for a reason (b/c you are very smart and they know you can handle the work) so you will do just fine without taking yourself too seriously and loosing handle of your life. I honestly found that I did the same grade wise if I studied for six hours or three and I was much happier only studying three to four hours a day (and my boyfriend would agree).

As far as furniture - check out this site: http://www.homereserve.com/

We bought a sofa, chair and ottoman and love it. I was very skeptical at first, furniture in a box sounds kind of cheesy but when we got the pieces and put them together it turned out very nice. And for a decent price too. Sofas can be very expensive, and we didn't really like the idea of getting used furniture (unless it came from people we know). I loved the idea of being able to change colors without having to buy all new sofas ... and slip covers are worthless b/c they always fall off and look pretty crappy. Plus, you can buy replacement pieces if you need them.

Craigs list is also a great place to look for furniture and pretty much anything else you need. Can find lots of cheap stuff and you can use the Baltimore search to find local sellers: http://baltimore.craigslist.org. You can do the same thing on ebay - I don't like ebay as much though b/c things tend to be much more expensive. Just my two cents though.

The gym is alright - it’s free so that is the one thing in its favor. It is above the Pratt street garage and there isn't any air conditioning which makes it very hot during the summer. I have not used it in two years though so it might have changed (we have a gym in the apartment we live at which I use instead). They have all sorts of equipment in the Pratt St gym and there are BB leagues and exercise classes.

There are plenty of class events – most will be planned by your class officers so it really depends on those people what kind of things will be arranged. The alumni office also does a lot of events … believe me you will have many chances to hang out with your classmates and the other classes too. Next year will be quite fun – our class is the bicentennial (2007) and there is supposed to be quite a deal of parties and events to celebrate. I do not have all the details but, from what I have heard the week of our graduation, there is supposed to be quite a deal of celebrations and gatherings. Believe me; you will have plenty of things planned for you during orientation too.

It can be a week of partying if you want – plus, you will be meeting all of your classmates and it is quite a fun time!

Yes, about orientation. How long has it been in the past? From the look of the calendar, ours is only Thursday and Friday and then classes begin on Monday. I thought I recalled orientation for last year's class (I looked at the calendar way back when) being longer, but I could be crazy.

Probably a dumb question, but are there any other types of facilities offered (i.e. swimming pool)? I'm assuming no, probably the only negative of not being on the same campus as the big state school...other than freshmen of course.

Kickass! New folks! Hey Docster and NL, it's great to meet you (even though I'm assuming NL is a Penn State alum, I can play nice with other Big 10ers). I've already met some of these folks in person, and I can tell you right now that we are gonna have a GREAT class. This year is seriously going to rock.

Everything seems squared away for my settlement on Thursday. I made my first home-related purchase on Saturday right after my home inspection - I bought a gas barbeque from a UMD 4th-year urology resident. So there WILL be a bbq at my house sometime in the near future...I'm doing the PSP, so I'd like to have one sometime in June or July!

luvumms, thank you so much for your words of wisdom, and for the great furniture link. One of the downsides to buying your own place is the fact that you have to furnish it yourself. Unfortunately, my home-decor skills are severely lacking.

LS...the punchbowl worked great! Thanks again for hooking me up. I'll return it to you via your hubby on Thursday. Speaking of Greg, I think he already broke my garage door. You might want to consider keeping him in the backyard, lest you end up with more holes gouged in your floor. 🙂

akestler, I already looked into the pool, and unfortunately, we have to go use the one on the UMBC campus. It's not that far away, though, and there's a shuttle. Plus, it's olympic-sized. I didn't know that the Pratt street garage isn't air-conditioned...that's going to suck big-time. Do they at least have fans?

Nope - no swimming pools anywhere downtown that I know of (except in the hotels) - not sure if you can go to the UMBC campus and use their gym. You would have to ask you can use the UMBC gym. Not sure what that is like, honestly I never checked it out - I went to College Park and was used to that gym … our gym here definitely a huge STEP down. There is a Golds Gym and a gym at one of the hotels that you can get membership to but, its kind of expensive ($30 - $40 a month) and I’m not sure if they have pools either. Like I said, I’m not sure if the Pratt gym has done renovations … I have not used it in a while but, there are fans.

That sucks that your orientation is only two days. Ours was a whole week ... and we partied to the fullest extent during that time. There was a “night event” each day (usually involving whatever bar had specials that specific night). That is typically planned by the second year class but, I don't know how it is now. You should get an itinerary the first day. Here are a few night scene recommendations I can make:

Tuesday nights at Camden Pub – Yuengs and Wings. Something like 35 cent wings and 6 dollar pitchers of Yuengling.

Gin Mill has ladies night (either Wednesday or Thursday)

Baha Beach Club has 25 cent bottles Friday from 7 – 10 pm. Power Plant has all kinds of drink specials throughout the week – look on their website for specifics.

Bay Café is a nice place to do happy hour on Fridays (buy one drink get one free) and it is great on beautiful days considering its right on the water. Expensive though.

One of my classmates put together a website for med school students. I’ll try to find the web address … he did a great job. He included shopping, groceries, night scene and just useful tips for starting med school. Hopefully I will see him sometime soon to get the details.

Hey, if all else fails, we can use the baby pool that my soon-to-be neighbor has in his driveway. Not very useful for lap-swimming, unfortunately 🙂

How much does it cost to get a jacuzzi/hot tub installed? THAT might be a worthwhile second purchase. Nothing goes better with a barbeque than a nice long soak in the hottub, while listening to the distant sounds of gunfire and police sirens on a hot Baltimore night.

Also, the "list" is up to 20 people! I think that's pretty cool - that's more than 10% of the incoming class! Keep it coming, folks! At this rate, we'll all know several folks by the time orientation rolls around. 👍

Glad the punchbowl worked out for you! As for Greg, maybe I should get one of those runner lines that people put up for dogs - so they can move back and forth, but can't really go anywhere. 🙂
