How much does it cost to get a jacuzzi/hot tub installed? THAT might be a worthwhile second purchase. Nothing goes better with a barbeque than a nice long soak in the hottub, while listening to the distant sounds of gunfire and police sirens on a hot Baltimore night.
Ah yes, the relaxing nighttime sounds of downtown Baltimore.

Seriously though, hot tubs are expensive. Thousands of dollars just for a basic one, not to mention the increased cost of your utility bill to heat the thing. Still, they are incredibly relaxing....that would be nice after a big exam or something.

It's just a pipe dream, really...they are a lot of $/maintenance. Besides, I really don't want to do anything to draw any neighborhood delinquents to my home at 3 am.

Of course, they could be good "target practice" for the rottweiler that I've been debating. We could even have an emergency medicine interest group that meets at my house..."Let's see what Shannon's dog has for us today! Ooh! A lacerated jugular? Good boy!"

Rottweiler's can actually be really sweet dogs when raised correctly...they're monstrous in size, though, which leads a lot of people to be afraid of them. Still, I would think twice before getting a breed like that, simply because if you ever move you may run into difficulties...some places specifically ban breeds such as pitt bulls, rottweilers, chows, etc that are known to be agressive.

No, I know, I've known a few Rotts who are great. My only concern would be big dog, city, needs lot of space, busy med student, etc. But hey, if you can make it work - go for it.

Yeah, this is a good point. We have a 40 lb dog that we are not taking simply because we don't think we'll be able to meet her energy requirements. I can't imagine what its like to exercise a 100+ dog (especially if they pull on the leash like our dog....I would get dragged across the neighborhood!)

I'm not sure what I want to do just yet. I want to see what my schedule is like. But I'd really like to get a dog. I have a small yard that it could run around in, and Carroll Park is within walking distance. The security factor is definitely an added bonus. It would make me feel more secure at night knowing that something big with lots of teeth was sleeping just outside my door.

Just don't get a puppy...they're cute but trust me, you'd be better off with a dog that is at least a few years old. That way they have already mellowed out and won't drive you insane, and hopefully they will have had some basic training. Our dog needs a lot less exercise now than she did even a year ago. If we could do it all over again we would get a dog that is 3+ years old.

Oh, god, I'm DEFINITELY not getting a puppy. They're cute, but too much frickin work! I've been looking exclusively at adult dogs. I don't want pee all over my floor and a room full of chewed shoes when I get home from class. 👎

Only 4 more days till VEGAS, BABY!!! 😎

Alright...I have officially withdrawn from all other schools. Its Maryland or bust, now!

So remember how I was wrestling with this idea (not a puppy), but a dog and everyone and their mother advised against it being that I was living alone, small apartment, med. student, etc... Well LW I have a nice story for you. So I am driving home late at like 2AM on Saturday night on Falls, and right as I turn into my neighborhood I see this beautiful lab/golden retriever mix running around, like I had to do a double take because it clearly does not belong in the street at 2AM on a saturday night. So I pulled over and called out to the dog who bolted over to me in a flash and I'm petting it and playing with it and talking to it and all that jazz, so much energy, definitely not a puppy but probably still very young my guess is like 3, anyway, to make a long story short, i call the people (luckily she had a collar) and they come over 20 minutes later to pick up the dog. They are so relieved to see her and thank me and I'm sad. Basically, they leave and I am left thinking "damn! that is an awesome dog, wow I am depressed, wow i really want a dog."

So yeah, basically I'm back to square one. 😕

Aww, that's sad, akestler. How about I make a deal with you?

I'll get a big, happy, stupid dog, and keep it at my house. You can come over and play with it whenever you want. Hell, I'll even let you feed it, water it, take it for walks, groom it, and clean up its poo every day, and I won't charge you a cent.

I think I'll just get a goldfish. 🙁

Eep! I haven't done that, either. I want my stinkin' $200 back! Georgetown and USC never even sent me a financial aid package. That really pisses me off. I worked my @$$ off to meet all their deadlines...why can't they keep us in the loop? 😡

That happened to me, too. I got a letter sayig I would be contacted by email about my financial aid package, and it never happened. Kind of seems unfair to make the May 15 deadline when they can't even take care of their end of the bargain. Still, I don't really care. I've been planning on Maryland for awhile now.

I found out the name of the random bar that serves huge drinks in vegas for you LW!!!!! It's Carnivale Court, in-between Harrahs and the IP.

Ugh. I guess it's a ploy so that we have no negotiating leverage with other schools. I planned on taking my full-ride scholarship letter from Georgetown, bringing it to USC, waving it under the Financial Aid lady's nose, and screaming, "Beat that, suckers!!"

Alas, the letter never came. Sigh.

I do not heart medical school admissions.

Sweeeeeeeeeet. I'm going to have a week like that at the end of July. July 31st - last day. Going away for the weekend August 4-6. Married three years - August 9th. Start med school August 10th. Hmm - that last one is a toss up.

Congratulations x 4 =). Hopefully three weeks from yesterday I'll be able to say the same.

I am such a nerd, I'm loving every second of the E3 coverage. I love video games!

Coz, you've almost caught up to me in # of posts.

We still need to beat the "views" record. I think we're like #5. Sad, people!!

Cozmosis said:
Psh, we're like #3 almost in 2010 threads. We will own them, but it may take time!

Well, I think we will pass Michigan maybe, by the time classes start, but sadly, I have doubts we will ever catch OK in views. 7500 views is a lot of views. And at somepoint, we're going to have to study. And we'll probably lose all the pre-matriculation program folks once that starts at the end of the month. 🙂

i second that. and what is up with the ps3 costing at minimum $500 retail. yeesh.

and $600 for the version actually worth anything.

With GTA4 coming out for 360 now at the same time, PS3 only has Metal Gear as an advantage, and that'll probably be ported. The "Wii" (what the hell) is based on a gimmick that doesn't look fun at all. The Nintendo junkies will go crazy, of course.

360 will be the system to beat. I'm definitely getting one over the summer, especially with the awesomeness that is Xbox live.

My husband plans on buying that when it comes out (and selling his current Game Cube). Looks pretty cool to me, but I'm not all that in to video games. I played Mario back in the day, but the only games I got into recently were the Sims Bustin' Out and some good ole' Super Monkey Ball.

I did manage to play some video game music at a recent recital, though. That was pretty cool...Ocarina of Time for string quartet (complete with a legit ocarina)...Halo for full orchestra...Final Fantasy stuff, and of course old school music like Pac Man and Super Mario. It was the most packed recital in the history of the MU School of Music...so much so that they are planning a sequel next year in the larger recital hall.

When I play video games, I play em to chill out, not to flail around like crazy just to get my guy to do something 😉

In any case, sports games are my favorite, so Xbox is the system for me.

LAST DAY OF WORK!!!!!
No more antitrust law ever, ever again!!
(Until I own my own biotech company, of course.)

👍

Congrats LW! I've only got one final left (tomorrow), and I can't wait to be done and outta here. I'm still planning on working at least until June, though. <sigh> Can't pass up that money....plus I really like the people I work with.

YAY SUPER MONKEY BALL!!! Best game ever (ok well at least in Greg and LS land where not many video games exist).
Who would have thought that monkey's rolling around in balls could be so much fun? I like monkey-golf...its probably the only time I will ever beat Todd at a game of golf.

I don't know anything about video games...I have nothing to contribute 🙁

I used to have an N64, though, but the only game I had was Zelda, with the cool horse that you could ride around. But I haven't played it in like 7 years. Other than that, I grew up with the old Kaleko system and graduated to the original Nintendo. I think I still have it somewhere. Mario Bros. was the shiz.

I am going to go through SDN withdrawal while I'm away! OK, probably not, but I've gotta get my fix today!

I'm envious of your trip to Vegas. I've never been, but it seems like it would be a fun place as long as you don't gamble all your money away. 😛

Ditto on the congrats LW!! Good luck on that final SQ, and I hear you about working. I'm going all the way through July, for the money too. Sigh.

Greg's parents went in February for a vacation. They don't gamble at all, and they had a great time just seeing shows and the sights.

Greg is actually in AC today. There was a party bus sponsored by his office that took everyone up. I called him while he was on the bus and asked if he was having fun (the sounds from the background told me everyone else was) and he was just focused on getting there and playing poker.

Thanks, guys 🙂

I'm not much of a gambler, so I'm not too worried about it. My attention span is that it'll probably be a fun novelty for about 20 minutes. I'm also a bit of a miser, so I don't think I'll be handing over much cash to begin with. The main attraction for us is going to be the pool, the clubs, and THUNDER FROM DOWNUNDER! (If you don't know what this is, it's basically a really raunchy version of Chippendale's, but starring hot Australian men. Check out the Excalibur website to see the pix 😉 )

I'm sorry that you ladies have to continue working. It goes by really fast, though. And think of all the money you'll save! I'll send you a ThunderFromDownunder postcard if you want!

OMG I would love a postcard. That would make my day.

Does anyone know if we have to "officially" tell Maryland that we are attending? Is it enough to withdraw from all other schools or do we have to send them a letter to confirm our acceptance?

I believe that your response when you initially got ur acceptance will do. I know that after sending in the form to them in order to accept the offer, I received a letter from Dr. Foxwell confirming that it was received. That should do, I believe.
