Where the heck is LW? I want VEGAS details. Also, I have not received a scandalous postcard.
 Yes, I want half naked men in my mailbox. Considering she doesn't have my home address, however, I can see why I haven't gotten a postcard.

Dean Wilson is retiring this year ... they have something like five candidates that have been through "town meetings" - where whoever wants to meet them and ask questions has the opportunity to do so then give the president of the campus opinions. Not sure when they will actually appoint one but I'm sure it will be sometime soon.

*mandatory morning bump*

i can already tell that today is not going to be a great day. but at least it's a friday =).

12 days of school left holla. 3 weeks till i leave for europe holla.

Wow, your semester goes late. Where in Europe will you be headed? (I'm really jealous!)

yeah the gtown program is 11 months, takes forever to finish, started last august, we even have a paper due july 1 even though class is finished may 31 but i plan on finishing paper first week of june.

As for europe I am still planning it with friends, but the highlights will be london, paris, florence, cinque terra, dubrovnik (dalmation coast in croatia - hear it is beautiful), prague, amsterdam, and maybe dublin if i still have time... oh yeah and how could i forget interlaken where i will probably go SKY DIVING 😱 should be good times, I'm gonna try and take a million pics.

Is any one going to the pre-matriculation summer session? If you are, have you found housing? I may have to give in and share an apt in the student housing (Fayette suite, I think), but it is so expensive.

Side note... Every few months I get tired of weightlifting and the small amount of running that i occasionally do, I'm trying to motivate myself to do other outdoor activities, i.e. mountain bike, kayak, etc... anyone know if there are a lot of places to go mountain biking near campus or kayaking in the harbor? good idea/bad idea? other ideas?

WAHOOOOOOOOOOOO I'm BACK!!!

Hey guys! Sorry I've been away for so long...man, is this thread slipping or what? Only 3 pages in the past 8 days? For shame!!! I'm sitting in a computer kiosk in the middle-of-nowhere Utah (seriously, I don't even know the name of the city, it's somewhere off I-70), and I got bored so I thought I'd check my gobs of email and SDN!

Vegas was AWESOME, I had the best frickin time ever. There were apparently some very scandalous photos of me taken on Friday night involving a loveseat, a blanket, and a container of ranch dip. I also allegedly "rode the escalator" at the Venetian....and I don't mean riding in the conventional sense. The Thunder from Down Under was a bit of a letdown, and there were no postcards, so I apologize, ladies. However, they did let our group up on stage, and I got to sit on one of their laps while another guy took photos. I had the chance to place my hand in a very opportune area...OK, get your mind out of the gutter, I put it on his chest, which was very nice because he was very shirtless and very buff. Not to mention, he kept bouncing me up and down on his knee. Very nice. 🙂 I'll have to show you the pictures...the guys were definitely hot!! The clubs in Vegas were so incredibly off the hook, I can't even explain how ridiculous this city is, you just have to go and see it for yourself!

After Vegas my sister picked me up and we did 4 National Parks in 6 days in Southeastern Utah - Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, and Arches. We just got back from Arches today. I'm covered with a layer of red dust, but the hiking and rafting was AWESOME. I almost died today trying to climb down a rock wall (it wasn't so bad going up!), but luckily I found a foothold and made it down in 1 piece. The Utah desert is hot as hell, and my fair irish skin burned despite the SPF45. We've been camping since Monday, so it's gonna feel so nice to sleep in a real bed tonight. I've got tons of crazy pictures from our adventures.

My vacation was fantastic, but I'm ready to come home and start moving into my new house! Only 1 more week until the PSP begins! How exciting!

Can't wait to see you guys again!
👍

Ari, mountain biking would require terrain. There is no terrain in Eastern Maryland. Hell, there's no terrain East of the Rockies, period. But I'm biased. 🙂

Seriously, though, have you ever been to Sugarloaf Mtn? I used to go there a lot when I was younger. They might have cool biking trails. I, too, like doing outdoorsy stuff, so maybe when we start school we can get a group together and take trips to do that kinda stuff once in a while.

And I dunno about kayaking in Baltimore Harbor...I don't think I'd wanna capsize in that water 👎

Vegas sounded like fun, LW. But I must admit I'm a little disappointed that I won't be getting a postcard (though I'm sure my husband is relieved). Utah also sounded cool..I've only been to Salt Lake City and perhaps the southeastern corner when my family visited the Four Corners back in the day (which was basically a square in the middle of the desert with an X dividing it into four states). I've never done rock climbing, but it sounds like a blast. Right now the only vacation I have to look forward to is a week in Colorado in June. I will be horseback riding in the Rockies, but hopefully will be able to get in some hiking and white-water rafting. We'll see. It's not Vegas, and its definitely not the Tour of Europe AK is doing. You guys put my vacation to shame.

Just thought I'd rescue our little thread from the bottom of the page. I wasn't expecting to be awake at this hour, but Total Recall just came on the tv, and I guess I'm a sucker for Arnold. 😎

Eep! Major thread slippage! We need to rule the boards once again!

I'm finally safe and sound back in Maryland. It's good to be home 🙂

I'm moving some stuff up to Baltimore today...I can't wait to go visit my house!

You know what sucks? $500 cell phone bills. Grrrr.
Whoa...how did you rack up a bill that high? I think our bill is only $80 a month for two phones.

Are you going the Uhaul route, or do you have friends with big SUVs/trucks to help?

Our bill is usually about $120 a month, with 4 phones (Greg's parents have phones to call one another and for emergencies).

This occurs when your husband starts a new business like real estate and begins to use exponentially more minutes than usual and doesn't think about it and you don't know so you can increase your rate plan.

I called the company this morning and now we have 3000 minutes. Should take care of the problem. I guess its a bright spot that they were nice enough to take $100 off because we are such loyal customers blah blah (and I begged).

if most of the calls are made from your house/his office you could get a skype phone, calls are made over the internet and are FREE within the US and Canada. My dad just bought one off ebay ($20) to experiment with, so far the calls seem pretty clear. This technology is still in the beginning stages, but I have a feeling it will quickly incorporate itself into regular cell use or maybe even take over a nice chunk of the market.

We don't have a home line, so that's something we might check out, but most of the calls are made from Greg to clients and such wherever he is throughout the day, rather than home or his true office. But its a good thought, thanks for the tip. 🙂

hey guys... i didn't realize sdn has threads for the entering class. i sorta accidentally stumbled on it from a google link when i was trying to figure out more details about our orientation! it's taken me 4 nights to get through all these posts, but i am finally caught up! you all seem like really cool people. i must confess one thing however......i am a duke fan. please don't hate me! i wasn't really a college bball fan prior to college, and then i went to duke... please love me for living in maryland my whole life and for coming to maryland for med school! i will try to tolerate the duke thrashing in return 😛. i'm also doing psp and i'm looking forward to meeting those of you who are in it!

do any of you know when our white coat ceremony is gonna be? are any of you guys gonna be commuting to psp? i was trying to figure out parking for that today and i'm really confused!

Holy ish, another PSPer. I think we're all on SDN 🙂

Only 1 more week until it begins! I will be commuting from my house, which is only 2 miles away. I think I'm gonna take the bus, since the stop is right across the street and goes directly to campus. But maybe I'll drive. I haven't decided yet.

I tried to move a whole buncha crap to my house today. Then I realized that the power had been cut off. 😡 Grrr! Now I have to wait 4 days until I can vaccuum.

I'm going up again tomorrow to take even more crap and attempt a thorough cleaning. I bought some cute housewares today (including margarita glasses! 👍 ) and I can't wait to start decorating. I still need to buy a bed...I brought my sleeping bag up, but when I realized the power was off, I decided against staying there. At least the water is still running.

As for how I'm going to move heavy furniture, I think I'm gonna need to hire movers to move my sofa, dresser, and the like. I don't trust anyone I know to do the job right 🙂

So, basically the only thing in my house right now is 3 stacks of books.

Oh, LS, did you see the newsletter? I'm Greg's Client of the Month! I feel so special!!! I'm sure the 10 other people who get it are jealous of me 🙂 More importantly, I get free movie tix or something. See? Buy a house, get free movie tix. Seriously, it'll save you in the long run, if you go to a lot of movies.

lol LW, congrats. Just so you know your movie tix may be a little delayed as Greg is currently locked in mortal combat with the company that was supposed to send them to him as they have not arrived yet and they are two weeks late. But he is fighting the good fight on your behalf!

Welcome to the thread Deepyboo. We [promise not to trash your place when we riot following Maryland victories. Also, the white coat ceremony at Maryland is later in the Fall. I think last year it was around November sometime.

I'm going to be commuting but haven't really looked into the parking situation. I think, though, that the garage in the top left corner of the UMD map (I think it's called Saratoga? - could be totally wrong, don't have the liberty to look it up right now) is available year-round for parking. They should have spots during the PSP. Our lecture building is only ~4 blocks away. Let me know if you figure it out so I can copy you =).

And welcome to the thread!!!!! 😀

Welcome to our little thread! And don't worry about your basketball loyalties. I was raised to be a Jayhawk fan, but soon set myself straight when I attended the Univ. of Missouri for undergrad. 😉 You'll come around to Maryland eventually (though I'll admit it was hard to root for Mizzou at that first MU vs. KU game in college...the next game I came prepared with a stuffed jayhawk dangling from a noose).

you all are going to learn to love me despite me being a dukie! i don't know if i'll be able to convert into a maryland fan..............

so this seems like the list of psp ppl so far (please correct me if i'm leaving anyone out, which i'm pretty sure i did)

solacecomes: i think i'm going to be using the one your talking about. the lexington garage that's on the "NW" part of the map they have on the parking webpage? i think it's 5 dollars for the permit and then 4 dollars each day u park there. i'm gonna start with that and then see how it goes from there. i'm not too familiar with the parking situation there so i think a lot will be playing it by ear. is that what you were thinking though?

also guys, what's the deal with university grants? if we haven't been given them yet, do u think we won't get them at all? i'm an in state resident and i didn't get one!!! 😡

You didn't get one because you are a Duke fan. 👎

In all seriousness, I don't know how they dealt out the grants. I do know that I submitted my FAFSA very early and applied for hella grants and scholarships, so perhaps that had something to do with it. Then again, Coz did nothing and got the same thing that I did, so maybe it's just dumb luck, just like the entire med school applications process.

Unfortunately, SQ isn't doing the PSP. The current list of 2006 PSP SDN representatives is:

Get your kicks now, folks! 1 week until we start! Who else is excited?! Also, if anyone is interested, I am going to take the bus (route #11) from my house to the campus for PSP. It'll take about 10 minutes to get to campus, since the stop is directly across the street. If you are interested, you are more than welcome to park near my house (free) and we can ride the bus together. Or perhaps we can carpool and only pay for 1 parking pass. I'll even make breakfast 🙂

I think I'm going to get a Senseo machine. But first I should probably get a bed. And a refrigerator. Priorities, man, priorities.

I don't think I qualify for univ grants since I'm out of state. I did, however, receive an email today saying, due to funding inefficiencies, I am no longer receiving my $5000 perkins loan. Boo. That one put me (and my husband) in a bad mood for a few hours.

Oh yeah...LW is right - I'm not doing PSP. Unfortunately I won't be in Baltimore until July, so you will all just have to suffer in boredom until the party (me) arrives. 😎

so basically the free money and the free-money-for-now-but-you'll-have-to-pay-it-later is a crapshoot. i filed my FAFSA pretty early too. oh well. SQ - that's outrageous that they're taking away funds they gave out!

wow - 6/18 PSPers on SDN. that's pretty hot. we should form a mini club within the club. i dare us all to show up with SDN written on our shirts or subtle indicators elsewhere on us that we're SDNers. just.......kidding. LW: i'm excited, but i think it's gonna be intense. it'll be cool though. we also will still have a month of summer left before the real grind starts, so that's not too bad either.

did loveumms ever post that website?

I will be attending. Just found a temporary apt in Fells Point (area is nice but pricey). I will be two blocks from Eastern Ave, and I was told a bus runs along Eastern to the school. I'll probably do that until I figure out the parking. I am also looking into buying a townhouse.

Does anyone know the actual number of hours per day that we will be in class for psp?

Congrats to everyone on their acceptances.

I am sorry for hijacking your thread, but I was wondering if any of you are EDP applicants, and if so is it ok if I pm you with some questions? OK I'm done hijacking. 🙂

I really hope to be a part of the class of 2010. I received the waitlist letter May 12 saying I was in top half of waitlist(170 total). But it also said class was over-subscribed, 220 accepted and a preferred class size of 170. Looks like 50 people would have to drop acceptances for the waitlist to even start moving. (last year they took about 30 off the waitlist but a couple of years ago I heard they took no one since only a few dropped and the class size was 200) I've been accepted to Georgetown and need to line up housing soon. Anyone heard anything yet? I looked at the WL threads in the pre-med threads and no one(SDNer, that is) from Maryland has accepted a spot yet though a few had dropped acceptances.

I thought the class size was 150?

I think I need the advice of someone who knows bikes. Our place is less than a mile from campus, so I'm looking at trying to bike to campus most days. I also found out that our house will be within the area serviced by the campus caravan after dark, so I can take that back if I stay after dark. I want something better than your standard walmart bike, but obviously I'm not hardcore and I don't need anything that's $1000. Anyone know anything about bikes? Greg knows houses, but hes no help on this 🙂

Yeah! Do not get a bike with an easily removed seat. They get stolen all the time in Baltimore. Don't get a really expensive one too because people steal the tires. Also, get a good lock because sometimes they can break a flimsy lock. I got a standard Walmart bike ~$40 and a Master bike lock. It was good to me for about a year, well worth the money in my opinion. I don't know if Maryland has bike racks but then again I guess you can lock it to the meter.

Thanks Mixtli but I was looking for something a little more specific, regarding brands, prices, places to buy them, etc. I'm glad that a walmart bike worked well for you, but I would like something a little better. A good lock is an obvious purchase I will make if I decide to do this. There are always plenty of places to lock up a bike even without a rack.
